A Thoughtful Classroom Update
Living and Learning in Third Grade
Nightly Homework
Just a reminder that each night students need to be making time for reading and math fact fluency! Reading can be enjoyed independently or as a partnership! Math fact fluency needs to be FAST and FURIOUS!!
Students also have log-ins for Typing Club. This can be practiced at night, as well! It is NOT a requirement, but a fun alternative to playing video games!! We do practice our typing skills 4 days a week during writer's workshop! This practice will help prepare students for the rigor of typing during the PARRC assessment that they take in the spring!
Reader's Workshop
Fiction sure is fun! Best book this week: The Mary Celeste...An Unsolved Mystery from History!! Ask your child for their theory on what really happened to this famous ship! Learning targets were: Using text illustrations and sensory details to determine the mood of a story, reading with great focus in order to infer/draw conclusions, identifying character traits, motivations, and feelings to deepen the understanding of a text, recognizing how a character changes from the beginning to the end of a story, and determining the meaning of literal and non-literal words/phrases in a text.
Math Workshop
Math workshop has been tricky!! Students are persevering and working hard to meet the daily learning targets. This week the focus was on: learning to estimate and add sums within a 1,000 and learning to estimate and subtract differences within a 1,000. Each lesson took two days. One day was to focus on the skill and one day was to focus on application. Students learned the importance of slowing down and producing quality work!
Writing Workshop
Students continue to grow their personal narrative. This week the learning targets were: using quotation marks and commas correctly when punctuating dialogue, writing an excellent ending, and working to publish their very first story! Next week student work will be published and students will write their narrative within a 45 minute time frame, from memory!
