ACT
Is it right for me?
SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS
ACT
There is NO LONGER a statewide ACT/WorkKeys administration given in the state of ND for all juniors.
So now what??
- Students who wish to take the ACT will need to register on their own through ACT.org and take the test on a national test date and at a registered location.
- Cost for ACT without writing is $66; with writing is $91.
- Stop by the counselor's office for more information or go to ACT.org to register.
- Fee waivers available for those that qualify.
How can I prepare for this test?
There are numerous ways!
But let me begin by saying the biggest preparation is already being done. Choosing rigorous coursework and applying yourself as a student is, hands-down, the very best preparation. That said, it is a good idea to practice for this test. Here are some of my suggestions:
1. RuReady ND - log into your account (you can get there through the Ed Portal icon in your PowerSchool), select the RuReadynd tab, and choose the ACT prep icon. There are 3 different online sites that offer practice tests and questions. I highly recommend Testive.
2. ACT.org - you will find helpful guidance on their website along with practice options. Some have a fee associated with them.
3. Workshops such as ZAPPING the ACT.
4. ACT in a box - these are flash-cards with questions on one side and answers on the other. See Mrs. Kaspari if you would like to check these out.
5. Kaplan ACT practice tests - this is a book with several full-length practice tests and test strategy help. See Mrs. Kaspari if you would like to check this book out.
Do I need to take (re-take) the ACT?
Great question. Not always, but sometimes it does make sense. Let's break it down:
Should I take the ACT if I don't plan to go to college?
- If you are not planning to go to college, you do not need to take the ACT.
If you are planning to go to college, check with the institution. Things to consider or find out:
- Does the school use ACT scores as part of their admission process?
- Do you need an ACT score to determine if you are ready for college-level classes like English and Math?
- Does the school use ACT scores as part of their scholarship eligibility?
*If you answer yes to any of these, you may want to consider taking the ACT
What about the ND Scholarship?
- The ND Scholarship requires a composite 24 on the ACT. If you did not meet the minimum and are just a point or two away, re-taking the ACT might help you get the score you need. However, if you are 3 or more points away, consider taking the WorkKeys tests instead to meet that requirement. They are a series of 3 tests, online format, given during the school year by Mrs. Kaspari, and are $12.50/each.
