MATH Update
For the month of September, a lot of what we will be learning about in math
will be taking concepts we learned in August using whole numbers, and
adding decimals to those concepts.
We will be exploring more about place value, from the billions place all the way to the hundredths place. This includes writing numbers in “Expanded Form” and “Expanded Notation” as well as finding the value of a digit in a numeral.
We will also be practicing adding and subtracting numerals with the place value position ranging from the billions place to the decimals place of the hundredths.
Another area we will explore is how a number with a decimal will be placed
on a number line.
Finally, we will begin exploring how decimals are related to fractions when working with tenths and hundredths.
READING/WRITING Update
In reading, students are learning to think about what they read. To observe new vocabulary, character traits and figurative language in order to improve their understanding of the text.
In writing, students are learning to generate ideas and then narrow the focus of an idea to a small moment.
In spelling, students will review rules taught in previous grades as well as focus on the rule regarding words with a double consonant in the middle.
In grammar, students will use and understand verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs in their various forms.
ISO Used chapter books to increase our classroom library. Feel free to donate any books your children are finished reading.
Thanks in advance.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES Update
This week we set up our interactive notebooks for both Science and Social Studies! We will use both the right and left hemisphere of the brain to help sort, categorize, remember and creatively interact with the new knowledge the students are gaining.
The more they process the information, the more they will understand it!
In Science we are building a foundation of solid observation and inquiry skills for Science so we can use them all year long. We will then apply those skills to the properties of matter, how heat affects matter and measuring mass and volume.
I just got the following information in my email today -
In March of 2016 there will be a spacecraft launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base called InSight. This mission is planned to land (September 28, 2016) on the surface of Mars and probe its interior - of which little is known.
Here's where the cool part comes in...
By going to mars.nasa.gov and clicking on the banner which reads 'Send Your Name to Mars on NASA's Next Red Planet Mission' you - we - can be part of this mission!
When you enter your name, it will be added to a microchip for installation on the InSight lander. So in a sense, you can go to Mars!
You can also print out a Boarding Pass for the mission to put on your wall, refrigerator, or whatever.
NOTE: There is a deadline for signing up. They will end registration on 8 September, so be sure to pass it along before then
In Social Studies we finished looking at the symbols of Texas. We will move on to "finding Texas" interpreting data related to Texas' place in the world, regions of Texas, geographic factors that contributed to our growth. We will then turn our focus to historic documents of Texas and the us Constitution.
Each week students will have a weekly quiz to see if they are understanding the concepts we cover that week. Be looking for this quiz in their Monday folder.
