Luckey Ranch E.S. Newsletter 3/4/19
We can't wait for the Family Picnic, this Friday!
Bring your picnic blankets, lawn chairs, lunch and drinks to celebrate with your LRE family. Families will be encouraged to eat together and enjoy the beautiful weather. Sack lunches will be provided by the cafeteria in lieu of a "hot meal." We hope to see you there!
All students will move out to the "backyard" between 11:00-11:15. Families will enter the school via the entrance/gates by the gym. Classes will have signs pointing you in the right direction. You may choose to eat with the class or find a nice spot to sit with your family. Student sign-out will be done through the classroom teacher.
A few additional activities are scheduled during the picnic:
- PK Rodeo- families can cheer on their favorite cowboy & cowgirl as they play rodeo games (PK only). 12:00-1:00 by Kinder playground.
- PTO will have activities for families. Thank you, PTO! You are amazing!!!
- Book Fair. In the library. Parents are invited to attend with their child. Please enter from the picnic grounds. Students who attend with their parent must be signed out from their classroom.
This event will be cancelled if inclement weather exists!

Media and Your Child!
Our children’s connection to media is everywhere, coming from more sources and more screens than we probably remember when we were kids: TV, movies, video games, handheld games, computers, cell phones, I-pads, I-pods, watches, etc. There are many wonderful uses for media that provide conveniences and education. There are also dangers in media use that as parents and educators, we are tasked to protect our children from. With all the amazing advances in technology, we cannot forget to make advances in how we protect our children from media that is not age- appropriate.
It is important to remember that children’s brains are not fully developed, specifically the part of the brain (pre-frontal cortex) responsible for critical thinking, judgment, problem-solving, and impulse control. When a child or adolescent views media showing violence, sexual content, or harmful stereotypes, their own ideas, feelings, and behaviors are impacted. Without some guidance from a trusted grown-up, repeated exposure to these kinds of media may lead to an increase in aggression and a decrease in empathy.
Quick tips for setting media guidelines:
• Limit the amount of screen time to 1-2 hours a day (or less if you notice it is negatively impacting your child).
• Model screen-free times/activities (like dinnertime, for example).
• Keep children’s bedrooms free of screen media (no TV, game systems, laptops, I-pads, cell phones, etc).
• Preview media that your child is interested in before you allow them to view/play it.
• Co-view media (if appropriate) with your child and discuss the content - this will help them develop critical thinking skills.
• Do your research about social media websites (like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) and closely monitor their usage. Remember, these sites are typically for ages 13 and up.
• Stick to rating recommendations. They exist for a reason.
• Use your parental judgment. Your children are counting on you to set their limits.

Attendance Winners!
Hello LRE Family and Friends!
Thank you, parents, for getting your kiddos to school on time (by 7:45)! Our first Attendance Competition has resulted in 3rd grade winning the overall competition! Congratulations to 3rd grade coming in first place with 13 stars! First-grade came in at a close second place with 9 stars and kindergarten receives third place with 8 stars. Congratulations to all of our Luckey Ranch Stars for shining brighter with our attendance! Attendance rewards will be provided during our picnic on Friday!
There have been several questions in regards to Saturday Attendance Recovery. Many parents have attended Saturday School with their child(ren) for Attendance Recovery. Thank you! The interest and effort you have shown in helping your child is inspiring! We will continue to offer Saturday Attendance Recovery for the following days:
March 23rd
April 6th
April 27th
May 4th
May 18th
Here are a couple of reminders to FAQ’s:
What qualifies my child for Saturday School? If your child has more than 8 absences for a semester or a combined total of 13 for the year, they qualify for attendance recovery. There may be extenuating circumstances, but please call/email Mrs. Shelly Guinn for clarification.
What details do I need to know about Saturday Attendance Recovery? Attendance Recovery begins at 7:30 and ends at 11:30 A.M.. Parents are required to attend and assist their child. Siblings are not allowed (unless they are students of LRE needing attendance recovery as well). The cafeteria will open its doors at 7:25 and parents may enter through the back. Front entry will not be permitted. Students are encouraged to independently complete as much work as possible, but parents should assist when needed. Administrative personnel will be on hand for any additional information.
If you have any questions regarding rules, procedures, or general concerns, please contact me at shelly.guinn@mvisd.org Thank you for your continual support. Have a wonderful week!
