A Wonderful Week with Poet Bill Buczinsky

This week, all classrooms participated in writing workshops with poet Bill Buczinsky. He performed last week at an all school assembly, and this week he worked with students to create class poems and original poetry in each of our classrooms. Picture below is Mr. B working with Mrs. Harrison-Hamel's 3rd grade class.

This program was provided for our school by a generous donation to the PTA from a Hawthorne family!

Homework Club Snack Donations Needed

Each Thursday, Hawthorne hosts Homework Club where around 70 students stay after school to get help with homework, read, play math games, and practice math skills using our online math supplement, Dreambox. To help the students get through the afternoon, a healthy snack is much appreciated! Please consider donating a non-perishable snack to our Homework Club. Thank you!

Update from the P.E. Department

Hello everyone, we have a lot of activities and events going on in the P.E. department and I would like to share some helpful information and important dates. Students in grades K-2nd have been practicing basketball skills such as hand dribbling, shooting form, and passing. We have been focusing on keeping eyes forward while dribbling, and keeping the ball below your waist. Students in grades 3rd-5th have also started a basketball unit and have been working on dribbling, passing, shooting, and different offensive and defensive strategies.

Fourth and 5th grade students had the opportunity to sign up for intramural basketball this week. Intramural basketball will be run every Monday and Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. in the Hawthorne gym. The first game will be on Wednesday, January 23rd. The season will conclude on March 20th. Schedules and teams were sent home with students on Thursday. Parents are more than welcome to come and watch their child play. Please check in and out at the office if you are coming to watch.

This year Hawthorne is excited to be working with the American Heart Association and taking part in their Kids Heart Challenge. Students will have the opportunity to raise money, and donations will go to the American Heart Association, and their fight to prevent heart disease. Prize incentives will be included with this program. More information on this program will be coming at the end of the month into early February.

5 Essentials Survey

Parents, you have the opportunity to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

· Effective Leaders

· Collaborative Teachers

· Involved Families

· Supportive Environments

· Ambitious Instruction

Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin. For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or 5essentials@uchicago.edu.
