African Tiger
Habitat
The Asian tiger is found in South Africa and parts of Asia. They live in tropical rainforests, evergreen forests, mangrove swamps, grasslands, savannas, and temperate forests. The climate they live in is usually warm and humid. Their home could be in either a den, cave, or a sheltered spot.
Description
The classification of the tiger is a mammal. The special body covering is the fur: black stripes, orange and white on the stomach. The average length of a male tiger is 8 feet- 9 feet, and the average length of a female 7 feet- 8 feet. The average height is 3 feet for both male and female. The average weight of a male tiger is 400- 700 pounds, and the average weight of the female tiger is 260- 400 pounds. Average speed for a tiger is about 35 mph.
Prey/Predator
The tiger is a carnivore and a predator. Their prey are deer, wild boar, wild cattle, young rhinos, and young elephants. But, they mostly hunt for deer. They use their fur coats to camouflage with plants and lie and wait and creep close to their prey. They lie down and bend waiting for a good time to catch the prey. They use their fast, small, flexible legs to chase the prey.
Adaptation, Critical Info
Tigers have good vision during day and night. During the night, tigers have 6 times of a better vision compared to humans. However, during the day, their vision is the same as humans but not as detailed. Tigers do not communicate until they mate. They are usually alone until they mate, and when they do, they use their sense of smell to communicate.
People are ruining forests in South Africa and Asia, which means the tigers will have no homes. Their habitats get destroyed by human activities (cutting down trees and ruining wildlife around the forests). Tigers hunt many prey, and humans are too scared to compete for space. World Wild Fund (for nature), or WWF, is protecting and connecting tiger habitats by monitoring tigers and their prey.
