W-FL BOCES SLS
October 2020
A note from Kate:
Welcome, autumn! While it's always hard to say goodbye to warm summer days, the beautiful fall foliage (and pumpkin spice lattes!) bring a beautiful change of seasons to the W-FL region; I hope that you are able to enjoy these crisp, lovely and sometimes spooky :) fall days!
SLS continues to work to support school districts and libraries with their remote and hybrid learning needs; now, more than ever, the expertise of school librarians is needed to help students, staff and families navigate a myriad of digital resources and information! Please use this link to schedule a time to consult with SLS about resource implementation, instructional support, automation needs, etc.; we are here to help!
Each Wednesday, SLS will be offering webinars/workshops on a variety of topics, including collaborative peer conversations, digital resource navigation tools, library instruction in the time of the pandemic, etc. We encourage you to participate to stay informed and connected!
Upcoming PD & webinars:
Reclaiming Your Why: October 28th
The Arrest and Trial of Susan B. Anthony: November 2
Swank, A Smarter Way to Teach with Film: Nov 10
Critical Literacy in the K-5 Classroom: November 18
In this session, participants will explore what critical literacy is and learn a critical literacy taxonomy that teachers can easily use to plan lessons and units. Teachers & librarians will learn about an ecology of critical literacy which involves discussing the importance of identifying educators' biases and assumptions, creating a classroom community for tough talk, and doing a curriculum audit to see what areas they might be able to integrate critical literacy. Sample lessons will be shared; ideas on how to talk about race, gender, class through read-alouds, and how to create activities across content areas to solicit critical literacy responses.
W-FL School Library Group: Nov 18
Join us in a conversation with SLS and other W-FL school librarians as we discuss the "chopportunities" facing school librarians this school year. Participants are encouraged to share lessons, ideas, favorite books and/or other projects with peers to help build a community of professional learning in our region. All are welcome to attend!
