Lower Mills students continue to spread Peace & Unity! #LowerMillsUnityQuilt

Inspired by the story, "The Colors of Us" by Karen Katz, students in grades 2.9 to 8 created self-portraits. Each tile showcases unique and beautiful features of our school community as we continue to be Peacemakers and spread unity in our words and actions. Ms. D, our phenomenal art teacher, had students create the color of their skin by mixing different colors of paint. Students learned that the color brown is represented in many different shades and that to create any skin color from paint, students can use the colors red, black, yellow and white. The colors can be mixed in different proportions to create gorgeous skin tones that represent our school community. I encourage you to stop by and check out the chart next to the Unity Quilt to see if you can find your child's portrait!

Lower Mills was selected as one of the Teacher Appreciation Day Sweepstakes Winners!

During the summer months, it is not uncommon to find one of the Lower Mills team members at Staples. We love looking through all of the flyers and getting the best deals! One Saturday afternoon, I decided to take some photos of Ms. Sellon with all of her new supplies for her grade 2 students. I posted it on Twitter and tagged Staples as part of their contest. Well we were certainly surprised to find out we were a selected as a winner! Can you imagine the excitement of new Sharpies, Post-It notes, glue sticks, Purell and much more! It is an educators dream!! Thank you Staples and the Lower Mills team for your continued dedication to ensure our classrooms have all of the learning tools needed for our students success!

Lower Mills is an official site on the Pokémon GO app! Watch out Pikachu might be under your desk!

Lower Mills students created a video with the tech support of the Engagement Lab at Emerson College. The contest encouraged youth across the City of Boston to engage in an authentic dialogue around the access and visibility of the Pokémon GO sites. Our students wanted to make sure that all communities were being represented! Through their hard work, talent and passion we can now celebrate SJP2CA Lower Mills as an official site!

Lower Mills Innovative Teacher Spotlight

Ms. Mary Kate Petterson joined the Lower Mills team last year as a First Grade teacher. Ms. Petterson has been a proud Catholic School student through elementary, high school and college. Did you know that Ms. Petterson was a dancer all through high school? Maybe she can teach us a few moves! Ms. Petterson graduated from Assumption College in May of 2016, where she majored in Elementary Education and History. Ms. Petterson was accepted into the highly selective and prestigious Boston College Urban Catholic Teacher Corps (UCTC), Cohort 20. As a member of UCTC she is working towards her Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. Members of the UCTC program live in an intentional community, rooted in our faith while being a full time student at Boston College as well as teaching full time. UCTC is grounded in four core values: Teaching as a Ministry, Simple Living, Community and Spirituality all which are woven through their academically rigorous course work and experience at our school. Ms. Petterson currently lives in the Saint Matthew's convent with Ms. Egan and 15 other house members. Ms. Petterson is known at school for her meticulous classroom, organized classroom library, perfectly laminated centers and most importantly her gentle spirit and love for our students! Ms. Petterson loves spending time with her family and her dog as well as spending as much time on the Cape as possible during the summer months. Ms. Petterson loves grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches and drinks at least two cups of iced coffee per day! P.S. Watch out around Christmas time...Ms. Petterson LOVES Christmas!
