Jeffrey/Mead Team Blog
September 19 - 30
Math
We have also introduced number talks focusing on addition and subtraction. Students will also be doing a computation check in soon. This will allow us to create small groups to give explicit computation instruction.
Calendar Grid and Calendar Collector for September are wrapping up. Students have spent time discussing the different patterns they see in the calendar grid. Mrs. Mead's class is going to continue this Calendar Collector into October as we continue to talk about volume.
The assessment window opened this week and as part of that, students will complete the Star Math assessment. Depending on the results some students may take additional assessments.
Math Stars
Writing
Students will continue to take word study assessments so we can determine instructional needs for groupings.
Reading
Ms. Jeffrey's class is in the middle of reading Capture the Flag. They are reflecting on the reading in their notebooks. We have discussions on Wednesdays and Fridays. Students can get support reading the books by accessing the audio recording in Google Classroom. Students have been incredibly responsible about keeping up with the assignments.
Students in Mrs. Mead's class have been reading Wonder. They have been responding to their reading in their Reader's notebooks. We have been discussing characters, their feelings, and the motivation behind their actions. Students can also listen along to an audio recording in Google Classroom.
In the coming weeks students will complete the Star reading assessment. After that, some students may complete other assessments such as the F&P Benchmark Assessment.
Read Aloud
Mrs. Mead's class is reading Book Scavenger. Emily and James have continued trying to figure out Garrison Griswold's new game. They think they have found a clue by search around an old restaurant called The Black Cat. While this has been happening Emily and James are also juggling school. In one of their classes, they are caught passing notes to each other in their secret language. To their horror, their teacher writes the note on the board and has the class work on decoding it! This leads to "code off" with the class, each student tries to write an unbreakable code. Emily and James end up making a bet with another named Maddie and the stakes are high! James will have to cut off his cowlick if he looses. We have noticed some tension building between Emily and James as James is worried about his hair and Emily is worried about The Gold Bug.
