Tips: Making the High School Transition Meeting
On Monday, May 16th from 2:30 to 3:10 PM, The Franklin Academy is hosting an opportunity for previous students (alumni) to support our soon-to-be graduating 8th Graders by answering any of their burning transitional questions. Basically, it's an informal opportunity for previous students to provide some insight/tips/wisdom to our soon-to-be 9th Grade students.
This event is called Tips: Making the High School Transition (informal informative panel). This will be hosted outside the school in our grass field with panel members.

CREATIVE ART with Ms. Simpson
ONCE UPON A PARSNIP
Our youngest little artists created some wonderful oil pastel pictures based on the book "Once Upon A Parsnip". The artists chose their own fairy tale characters shopping in a market.
Enjoy the creations here via the link below:
FRUIT DRAWINGS & FRUIT RELAY RACE FOR 5TH, 6TH, 7TH, 8TH GRADES
Middle School Art students practiced drawing fruit and a fruit basket with just a pencil and eraser in their art journals. Most of our Middle School artists took their time and slowed down to concentrate on the lines, shape, values, space, and values.

JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT STORYTELLING ART, 5TH-6TH GRADES
During the Black History month, 5th & 6th-grade artists learned about the famous Black American artist, Jean Michel Basquiat. Students chose a story to tell in their pieces, (such as Briar Rabbit or Jack and the Beanstalk) with a focus on the main character, using text to describe/represent it, and a scene or landscape to place the story.
The unique pieces can be viewed via the link below:
THE READING CORNER with Mrs. Samuel and Mrs. Snyder
During the past month, Kindergarten and First Grade students have been reading a lot of stories about eggs!
In The Easter Egg, by Jan Brett, we learned about many different types of Easter eggs, including traditional Ukrainian pysanky eggs which are quite beautiful!
We enjoyed reading, “The Donkey Egg,” by Janet Stevens, which led to discussions about which animals lay eggs.
This week, most classes read, “An Extraordinary Egg,” by Leo Lionni, a silly and fun tale featuring frogs, alligators, and a “chicken.” We had an egg-cellent time!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Snyder

WHAT OUR PARENTS HAVE TO SAY
Tung M. Ha, DO & Kerri Fitzgerald, MD
Daughters in 4th and 8th Grade
Both of our daughters began their education at The Franklin Academy in the preschool program. Although we live near a well-regarded public elementary school, our family chose to continue our daughters’ education at The Franklin Academy. We were impressed by the high academic expectations in a welcoming and nurturing learning environment. Teachers can focus their efforts on educating students instead of disciplining disruptive children.
At every grade level, my daughters have had a close-knit peer group that is academically strong and engaged in extracurricular activities. These friends are supportive of one another inside and outside of school. The school does a remarkable job of balancing academic rigor with holistic child education. Moral character development is an integral part of the curriculum. With a student body that is culturally and religiously diverse, we appreciate the universal humanistic values that are discussed in the chapel and intertwined in the classroom.

Mrs. Dudley's & Mrs. Misday's 4th Grade Writing
Equality in Education
Equality in Education
In February fourth grade students learned about outstanding African Americans whose passion, sacrifice and hard work led to important contributions to history, culture, education and our society. The fourth graders were challenged to complete a writing assignment on Equality in Education which included:
Paragraph #1 - Introduction to Mary MdLeod Bethune and Thurgood Marshall and their joint contributions to education.
Paragraph #2 - Mary McLeod Bethune's lIfe and contributions to education/society
Paragraph #3 - Thurgood Marshall's life and contributions to education/society
Paragraph #4 - Closing Paragraph - Summarizing the contributions of both leaders and what they will be remembered for.
All of the fourth graders worked on this project for weeks and did a fantastic job with their writing, editing and learning how to put together an essay.
Women's History Month
As a culminating activity, students worked with a partner to create a poster on one of the famous women, highlighting their life achievements including: their occupation, their claim to fame, and their impact on the world! The fourth graders did a terrific job with this activity!

Explore Science with Ms. Harris's 7th Grade Class
Newton's second law of motion pertains to the behavior of objects for which all existing forces are not balanced. The second law states that the acceleration of an object is dependent upon two variables - the net force acting upon the object and the mass of the object.
Ms. Harris's students tested this law with their own creative setup using weighted toy dump trucks, student-created ramps, and water bottles.
What did you enjoy about the experiment?
"I love physics." Evan K.
