Temperature Guidelines for recess and before school

Now that we are in the cold weather season please be reminded to send your child with the appropriate winter gear to ensure they are properly equipped for the weather while they are outside while here at school. Below are the guidelines we use to determine whether students go out for recess or stay inside.

Our school adheres to the following wind-chill temperature guidelines:

Full Recess: 11 degrees or higher

Inside Recess: 10 degrees or below

Referral Drive Update

Ekstrand Elementary collected 1,461 items for the DeWitt Referral Center during their two weeks of collecting items. How awesome!! Everyone's generosity will go to help many families in need of additional assistance throughout our community.

Lego League

This year we have integrated Future Lego League Jr. into our (WIN) time at the First Grade level only. Mrs. Wackerle and Mrs. Richmann serve as the sponsors and coaches for this group of students. Participants on the team were determined based on the fall screening scores all students take three times throughout the year. Being the first year we have implemented this into our building we wanted to have a systematic way of determining those students whom would be participating. We are currently exploring different ways we hope to expand this program throughout Ekstrand during the school day as well as outside of school hours. I will continue to share additional information as we look to expand the program.

Guidance

Kindergarten - Through the month of December our Kindergartners will continue to learn how to identify different feelings. Our goals for these lessons are to broaden their vocabulary in order to better understand their own emotions. They will also be learning that there are three ways of identifying another person's feelings: look at their face, their body, and the situation. These three things help us determine how another person is feeling.

1st Grade - The first grade classes will be delving into the world of understanding that sometimes our feelings may differ than someone else's about the same situation and having empathy. From here, students will be talking about how accidents happen and the best way to respond to accidents.

2nd Grade - In these classes, we will be looking at respecting differences as well as showing care and compassion. The objectives of this topic include: determining what others are feeling using physical, verbal, and situational clues and labeling their own preferences as the same as or different from others' preferences.

3rd Grade - In third grade we will focus on making friends and showing care and compassion. A large part of our compassion lesson is understanding empathy because without empathy, it is difficult to show compassion. Students learn that "compassion is empathy in action". Not only is it important to recognize and understand how another person feels, but we should also make an effort to show compassion when we see someone struggling with their feelings.

Ekstrand Student of the Month

Big picture
Joel Bauer a kindergartener in Mrs. Petersen's kindergarten class was selected as Ekstrand's student of the month across the district. Joel is recognized for being an extremely hard worker. He always tries his best and comes to school with a smile on his face. He makes his teacher laugh everyday! Joel cares about others and is always offering to help someone. He is a great example of a SABER.

Below are the students that were nominated at the building level by a teacher to receive recognition for being great SABERS around the building.
