The Kersey Chronicles
Rockstars Choosing to Matter in Room 25
For the LOVE of reading!
Try This At Home ...
We have been practicing summarizing, and sharing book reviews with other readers. Consider sending a tweet from your Twitter account that summarizes and critiques a book your child has recently read! Be sure to tag me @LFKerz
You've worked hard to establish those homework routines. This week, try to release some of that responsibility to your child and see if he/she will take ownership of homework routines. At the end of the week, meet with your child to reflect on his/her work!
Check out our communication skills at work from last week!
Next Week's Set List (August 24-28)
Week at a Glance/Skills for the Week:
LITERACY – We worked hard this past week on identifying quality (or not) book talks and reviews. Now students will have chance to practice by writing a book review, and finding a creative way to share it with others. We are building a love of reading!
WRITING – Students are practicing many different ways to plan and prewrite their stories before they begin drafting. Students still have free choice in what they want to write.
MATH – We finished Unit 1, and will begin Unit 2 next week. Here is a great resource for parents to help with math homework: http://everydaymath.uchicago.edu/parents/5th-grade/
SPELLING – Next week will be the unit 3 spelling test. The core words are there, sentence, often, it's, and different.
SCIENCE – No Science this week.
SOCIAL STUDIES – We continue unit 1 in Social Studies next week, which investigates Indiana's physical features. Essential Questions to explore: How have people over time adapted to the changes in the land? How do people use the land's resources? How have people benefited from the 3 regions created by glaciers?
TIPS - We have practiced collaboration, communication, and creativity in our class over the last three weeks. Next week, we will practice the final C of the 4C's ... Critical Thinking! It's my personal favorite and is a much needed skill for not only 4th grade, but for college and career readiness.
