Westward Expansion

Manifest Destiny
The meaning of the painting is the harsh western expansion. The goddess represents Columbia and progress leading the group to the new land. The dark sky represents the past, but behind them is clear skies representing the future of the expansion.
1827- UK and US jointly agree occupy Oregon
Citizens from both countries were allowed to use the land. Later the arrangment ended with U.S. gaining the land.
1836- Texas independence
Texans gain independence from Spain after the Battle of San Jacinto.
1845- Texas annexed
The U.S. gained one of the biggest expansions in the U.S. to soon declare war against Mexico.
1846- US declares war against Mexico
As the US was moving across to the continent towards the Pacific Ocean the border of Texas was disagreed on and the US declared and won the war.
1848- Mexican cession
The name of the land that Mexico had given up to the US due to the results of the war.
1848- California gold is discovered
Soon after the US gained the land James Marshall unexpectedly discovered something shiny in the ground and it turned out to be gold.
1849- California gold rush starts
Many citizens of the US from all over, take their journey to California in hopes of finding gold.
1853- Gadsden purchase
The purchase of present day Arizona and New Mexico.
The Santa Fe Trail goes through central North America and was mainly used by Mexican and American traders (used for trading purposes). The Oregon Trail went from Missouri to Columbia River and was mainly used by families, fur settlers, and farmers (used for land). The California was a part of western North America and was used by emigrants (used for seeking gold). The Morman Trail is located across Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Utah that was mainly used by the people of The Church of Jesus Christ (religous and land purposes).
Texas Revolution
- Settlers move to Texas to grow the population to become a state.
- The Battle of the Alamo was a battle between General Santa Anna and Colonel William Travis. Being raided by Santa Anna, Texans held on for two weeks to then be all dead, including the well known Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie.
- The Battle of San Jacinto was between Sam Houston and Santa Anna. Santa Anna's army was quickly surrounded and defeated by Houston. Houston's troops captured Santa Anna and was forced to sign a treaty for Texas independence.
Mexican-American War
- Texans gained independence from Mexico and the U.S. declined their need of becoming apart of the Union.
- The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was a peace treaty between Mexico and America.
- The American settlers in California declared independence from Mexico. The state joined the Union in 1850 to then have the bear flag become their state flag.
- The treaty to make parts of present day Arizona and New Mexico apart of the United States.
Why people are going to mine for gold
Many of the people in the US from all over are traveling in various ways to get to California. Mainly men are making the trip in hopes of finding gold. Finding gold would allow families to make money and make a living off the gold rush.
