October 30: No School

School Starts at 7:54...Attendance Matters

The first step toward learning in school…is being in class! Prompt arrival and regular school attendance plays a crucial role in a student’s overall academic achievement. During the early elementary years, children are gaining basic social and academic skills critical to ongoing academic and social success. Research shows that frequent absences in kindergarten through 3rd grade is clearly associated with poor achievement, truancy in middle school, and more serious consequences in high school (frustration, school suspension, credit loss, school dropout, legal trouble, substance abuse, fewer career choices and lower paying jobs). School starts at 7:54. The doors open at 7:24 and Morning Assembly begins at 7:40. We recognize those students and classes with the highest attendance each quarter...so help your McMillan Mini-Dog know that attendance matters! Thank you for the support!

Outdoor Classroom Benches...

Our outdoor classroom continues to grow! Today we received (8) benches made from our own MHS Ag Construction classes (taught by Mr. Tyler Burgin). We also have a rain barrel to recycle rain water and a bird house. Mrs. Ellen Tucker wrote an A+ Grant for the funds to create this amazing outdoor learning space for our school. Pictured above are our awesome 5th grade helpers who moved the benches for us.

$2,000 Dollar General Literacy Grant

McMillan recently received a $2,000 Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant! Ms. Moppin, Principal, wrote the grant to help fund the Book N Bag program. The goal Book N Bag program gives each student in McMillan (7) FREE books every year that are appropriate for each student's reading level with the intention of helping McMillan students build home libraries that they will enjoy for years to come. The program is also funded through the annual Read-A-Thon in March and Box Tops for Education proceeds. First round of books (over 700) will be distributed the end of October.

Nurse Buck's Reminder

It's FLU Season!

Remember to wash hands often, cover your cough and sneeze and stay home if you are running a fever. According to district policy, if a student has a fever of 100.4, they are to stay home for 24 hours fever free without the aid of medicine (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.).

Fall is upon us so it's also time to get out your jackets, coats, hats and gloves. Students will go outside for recess as long as the temperature and wind chill are above 20 degrees. Be sure all those are clearly labeled!
