Choosing a topic
- is your topic persuasive?
- are you passionate about your topic?
- do you know a lot about your topic already?
- do you have a personal connection to your topic?
Researching
- Limit the words you use
- Use AND, BUT, OR, NOT to help narrow your search
- Use "quotation marks" to keep search terms together
- Use specific vocabulary
- KEEP TRACK OF THE SITES YOU USE!
Writing your rough draft
Introduction
- attention getter; background information (prove that you know what you're talking about); address (Dear teachers and fellow students . . . ); thesis (one sentence that tells your audience what your main points are)
Body
Each body paragraph: - topic sentence; make your point (explain your point using research/personal connection; give examples); mention where your research came from; concluding sentence
Conclusion
- re-state your thesis in different words; give a short summary of all your main points; end with a bang!
Editing
- Read your work OUT LOUD!
- Does your work make sense?
- Are the ideas linked?
- Can you pronounce all the words?
- Have you used figurative language (similes or metaphors)?
