Peek at the Week

Mrs. Bennett's First Grade News, Week 15, December 4-8

A Note From the Teacher

We will be boarding Pebble Creek Airlines, flight 106, and our first stop is Germany. We will be visiting many different countries over the next two weeks.. We will learn about the different continents, languages and how to say the holiday greeting. We will also see many pictures of the landscape and learn about the climate in the country we visit on our magic carpet. Last, we will learn about a specific tradition and make something to help us remember that country. Next week, we will add everything to our "suitcases" to bring home in two weeks.

Our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) Boxes are up and running today. I want to give a huge shout out to the PTO for the grant we won! We could not have put these boxes together without your generosity! Our kids are thinking outside the box and problem solving like crazy! I'm so excited to see the new creations and inventions!

Be sure to check out the new green December spelling menu for extra spelling practice. I've included a sign language page to practice spelling words with!

In math this week, we will learn strategies to solve word problems. It will include addition, subtraction and the missing part. Here is an example: "Jan had some stickers. Her sister gave her 8 more stickers and now Jan has 12 stickers. How many stickers did Jan start with?" Our reading skills are drawing conclusions and expression. Our language arts skills are adjectives and verbs. In writer's workshop, our focus will be editing, using personal word walls and writing more and more clearly. I've been busy testing reading levels for the 2nd 9 weeks. I've truly looked forward to coming to work everyday this year and teaching all of your children. Thank you for sharing your wonderful kids with me!
