Feelings and Actions: The Connection

Feelings and actions are very connected, yet it can be very difficult to help children channel the correct behavior even when they are feeling an intense emotion.

At school, we work with students to identify feelings, how their body feels when they experience a feeling, and what to do if they would like that feeling to change. We also to use phrases and language to help them express themselves when they are in a situation. These phrases are very helpful when a student is experiencing an intense feeling and it may be difficult to think of certain words to say. Some of the phrases are:

  • "I feel _(feeling word)_____ when __(this event happens)________.
  • "I do not like it when you do that. I would like you to stop or __________ instead."

Modeling, empathy, and consistency are very important factors when helping students deal with emotions and regulate their feelings.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me at school!

K-5 Counseling Corner: School Skill Success!

Kindergarten through 5th grade are reviewing the basic skills to help us come back from winter break with success. We will be reviewing, following directions, listening, organization, goal setting, and prioritizing. Please ask your child about which animal is helping them learn; there is an animal puppet friend that visits each class to help learn the skill!

6th-8th Counseling Corner: Career Exploration!

6th-8th grade are beginning their career exploration unit this January. This is a very exciting unit, as well as important as the students will identify career paths of interest. Each grade will also embark on projects to assist in their career exploration. We use the Missouri Connections website to guide students through interest inventories, career information, and tools to help them build resumes. Please visit the link below to learn more about Missouri Connections.
