Feelings and Actions: The Connection
At school, we work with students to identify feelings, how their body feels when they experience a feeling, and what to do if they would like that feeling to change. We also to use phrases and language to help them express themselves when they are in a situation. These phrases are very helpful when a student is experiencing an intense feeling and it may be difficult to think of certain words to say. Some of the phrases are:
- "I feel _(feeling word)_____ when __(this event happens)________.
- "I do not like it when you do that. I would like you to stop or __________ instead."
Modeling, empathy, and consistency are very important factors when helping students deal with emotions and regulate their feelings.
