Learning Spotlight

This past week 7th graders were able to experience the great outdoors at LLELA. They explored a variety of habits and ecosystems within a deciduous forest and both native and non-native ponds. Students learned about succession and erosion and a variety of plant and animal species including different birds, squirrels, frogs, snakes, tadpoles, whirly gigs, dragon fly nymphs, water scorpions, and many more fun critters!

Students channeled their inner scientists, gathering data such as dissolved oxygen, pH levels, turbidity, and water and air temperature. They also classified animals and insects that they found. They experienced a little local history in the Ritter Cemetery and learned about weathering and how it affects different materials. There were some close encounters with wildlife. Ms. Weaver saw a bobcat, and found a car to relax in. Coach Fields channeled his inner Steve Irwin to deal with a water moccasin a little bit closer than he wanted.

This is a unique hands-on learning experience that just can't be duplicated in the classroom. Thanks to all the 7th grade teachers, science teachers, and other volunteer staff who make this possible!
