Mrs. Baker's Class Newsletter

October 15,2015

What is going on?

Math: We will begin our measurement unit focusing on standard units of measure such inches, feet, yard, centimeter, and meter. Students will directly compare the lengths of two or more objects as well as estimate solutions and solve problems involving length measurement.

Reading: We will determine the Topic, Audience, and Purpose of our nonfiction texts and different forms of media while exploring Round Rock landmarks. We will dig deeper into learning how to read these texts as well as how to gain factual information from these resources. We will begin to research our landmarks in depth and grasp how to cite sources this week.

Writing: We will be publishing and sharing our small moments narrative in the beginning of the week. We will begin learning about expository writing and the features used by writers to make “All About a Topic” books. One of the products that students will be creating during our Project Based Learning about Round Rock landmarks is an All About book.

Sight Words: We are learning the following words this week: along, coat, end, first, home, name, say, three.

Please continue to work with your child to read, write, and spell these words with consistency.

Science & Social Studies: We will be studying landmarks in our community through the students PBL projects.

On Sat. The Chisholm Trail days is hosting a cattle drive and Sam Bass shoot out. This would be great for kids studying these topics in PBL.

Chess, Robotic, and Coding Classes:

Second Grade has the opportunity to provide a rotating enrichment program during our Stallion Stampede time of the school day. Chess, Robotics, and Coding will rotate through the grade level classes at different times of the year to provide enrichment opportunities to small groups of students. Each rotation consists of 4 once a week sessions.

Teachers will determine the students who will attend the sessions. Our grade level strives to provide enrichment in all areas and times of the school day. Teachers are stretching second grade thinking throughout the day and providing enrichment activities to students during Stallion Stampede in the classroom.

This enrichment opportunity needs parent volunteers to be successful! Please consider donating an hour of your time once a week to help the students engage in the awesome learning experiences.
