From the Desk of the Principal
On behalf of our entire staff, we hope that this communication finds you, your lion(s), family members, loved ones, and neighbors well. Our staff has been working diligently over the past several weeks preparing for distance learning. They have come together in this new virtual world so beautifully and I am proud of their efforts, positive mindset, and perseverance during this time. They are collaborating to best leverage our technology platforms, supporting each other at all times, and constantly sharing ideas with our leadership team and each other on how to best serve our students. Our student services team is well-positioned to support our students as we embark upon distance learning. It was so nice to see students during the orientations on Wednesday this week, and we can't wait to see our students during check-ins this each week.
I am thankful for the support of Dr. Martirano, our HCPSS Leadership Team, and our Curriculum and Central Office colleagues for their tireless efforts during this transition to distance learning. It is a big task. Their ongoing support and thoughtful and intentional professional learning provided to us has been outstanding.
Families, please ensure you have received Canvas announcements from our classroom teachers. Canvas is going to be an essential component for communication and learning between our teachers, students, and families. Please double check your Canvas notification settings to ensure you are receiving announcements and assignments from teachers.
Directions on updating your parent profile and notification settings are available online. Parents/guardians unfamiliar with Canvas may find it helpful to review the features in this Canvas Orientation.
It is important to note that a student MUST be logged into his/her hcpss.me account to access virtual learning. In order to ensure that your child(ren) can login correctly, we recommend using an incognito window on your Chromebook browser to log in to hcpss.me. If you are not using a Chromebook, we recommend that you open a new private window in Firefox or Safari on your preferred device. Just a reminder that students can reset their usernames and passwords independent of teachers and staff. Directions on using self-service can be found online.
Families that require technology access, or have a greater need than anticipated, can still request to borrow a device. There is a new process for requesting devices, now done via HCPSS Connect. Details can be found online. Information about wifi sources is provided on our HCPSS website.
Thank you for continuing to be such an incredible community during this period of time. Please continue to reach out to me, Ms. Wright, or your teachers if you need any support.
Mrs. Anoff
A Word About Attendance
Beginning Monday April 27th, staff will take student attendance via student participation in Virtual Check-Ins, Work in Dreambox, or work in Lexia.
Elementary school students are expected to participate in three different measurable types of Continuity of Learning activities every week: virtual check-ins, work in Dreambox, and work in Lexia. Students should also engage in activities posted in Canvas. Each of the following activities will earn students a point (1 pt):
- Participate in virtual check-in with teacher through hcpss.me
- Engages in Dreambox
- Engages in Lexia
Every student who earns at least one point during the week (participates in one of the above three activities), will be marked “Present” for the entire week. Any student who does not earn at least one point during the week (participate in none of the above activities), will be marked “Absent” for the entire week.
Students who do not meet these criteria will not receive credit for attendance. The Maryland Department of Education has approved these measures of attendance for distance learning in Howard County. Of course, we want students to complete every assignment given on their teacher's Canvas page and to check in with the teacher weekly.
Google Meet Behavioral Expectations
While our students will be using Google Meet to meet virtually with their teachers and other classmates, we wanted to review expectations for these check-ins. We expect all LES students to:
- Follow our ROAR Rules - Respectful, Organized, Always Safe, and Responsible.
- Students will only be permitted into a Google Meet virtual check-in session with an HCPSS email account.
- Adhere to HCPSS Policy 8080 Responsible Use Technology and Social Media and other relevant HCPSS policies.
- Inappropriate/offensive/threatening comments, misrepresentation of identity, and/or disruptive participants (invited or uninvited) during Google Meet virtual check-in sessions will not be tolerated.
- Do not share login information with others, as this violates the confidentiality rights of other students and places them at risk.
- Students who are disruptive and/or “trespass” Google Meet virtual check-in sessions will be immediately reported to the administration and will receive appropriate consequences in accordance with the HCPSS Code of Conduct. Consequences may result in temporary or permanent loss of technology access, which will also result in a student's inability to participate in Google Meet virtual check-in sessions; assignments will be provided to parents.

Teachers have and will continue to send messages to students using Canvas.
