News from the 7th and 8th grade
Students in Mrs. Oney’s Multimedia 7th grade classes explored the editing palettes of Print Shop 3 as they created flyers for various events at school. Students used digital cameras to capture spirit week photos, which were imported into a photo app and edited for use in video announcements. Students practiced writing computer code in October. iMovie projects relating to Veterans Day were created and shared for video announcements in early November. Currently, students are using GoAnimate to create explainer videos to help explain a complex concept or to promote an event at school. Students in Multimedia 8 recently toured EHOVE and created an iMovie about their trip. iMovies were also created for the 5th Quarter, the Parade of Bands, Veterans Day, and sports highlights. Students researched the events of September 11th and created an iMovie project dedicated to Patriot’s Day. Flipgrid video responses were created and shared in Google Classroom. Students showed their creative side as they designed ads for a product or a company using the Biteable application. Students will be using Screencastify to capture screen footage to use in the upcoming Christmas Around the World projects in Ms. Stoneham’s classes.
Science
Recently 8th grade science students launched model rockets as part of a unit on forces. Students looked at how forces such as thrust, friction, wind, and gravity influenced the flight path of rockets. This was the 30th consecutive year that jr high students have launched model rockets at South Central (See Pictures Below)
Math
In all 7th grade math, students are learning about percent. We have been talking about finding the percent of a number, discounts, markups, gratuity and commission-based jobs. Using percents is a life skill that we use often in our daily lives. So, parents, if you are out and about with your child shopping perhaps ask them what the price of an item would be if it happens to be marked down or if you have coupons for percent off of an item, what would that price be. If you are eating at a sit down restaurant have your child help you figure out the gratuity for your check or what tip you could leave the hair stylist who does your hair. Some of the commission-based jobs we have talked about are car salesman, realtor, and furniture sales. Talk to your child about how these skills are incorporated into your daily lives at home so they can make that real-world connection.
Reading
The ELA 8th grade students are busy working on their “Christmas Around the World” project. The students are researching how other countries celebrate Christmas by writing a five paragraph essay and designing a google slides presentation to present to the class. With the help of Mrs. Oney and Mrs. Sparks, they will be using some technology such as screencastify, i-movie, and Google Earth to enhance their presentation. Any parent who would like to watch the presentations are welcome! Please contact me, Ms. Stoneham, for details through email or phone. Lstoneham@south-central.org or call 419-752-0011.

SCMS Food Drive
The South Central Jr. High Student Council will be holding its annual holiday food drive Monday,
December 4 through Friday, December 8. Students in grades 5 – 8 who would like to participate
are being asked to bring in non-perishable food items. All items will be distributed to the North
Fairfield Neighbor-to- Neighbor Food Pantry and the Plymouth/Shiloh Food Pantry to help
people in our own area this holiday season. Please check the expiration date of any items you
send in as we can’t donate expired items.
Items will be turned into the students’ homerooms each morning, and Student Council
members will keep a record of the items donated. The homeroom that donates the most items
to be shared with people in need will receive a pizza party. In addition, the three students in
each grade, 5 through 8, that donate the most will each receive a $10 gift certificate. Of course,
the real purpose isn’t to win a prize, but to make the holidays a little brighter for people in our
own area.
The Student Council has sponsored this food drive for over 20 years, and each year the
generosity of our community is overwhelming. Thank you for your continued support of our
students as they work to help others.
