ARE Media Center News - April 2016

Barcode Cards

Please have all students wear their barcode cards any time they come to the media center. This drastically improves check out times! :) If you have students who still need a card, email Ms. Sweeney and she'll order them for you.

Book Room Update

If you have gone in the Book Room lately you may have noticed things are starting to change! We are transitioning from the white book boxes that were labeled with a Wake County level to bags that are labeled with the Guided Reading letter. Books are now organized by letter level (we are using Fountas & Pinnel which is very closely related to Mclass levels) and separated by Fiction or Nonfiction. Now you can walk in the Book Room knowing your students' reading level and walk out with books at the perfect level. If you are looking for a specific title you may use the Catalog search feature on the laptop. We are working to add the letter level to the Destiny records as well as creating a spreadsheet that will be remotely accessible. We apologize for the mess as we continue to work in there but are excited by the progress so far! Please ask if you have questions or need help finding a book!

FREE Stuff!

I still have A LOT of white boxes and metal shelf organizers. If you would like some (or many of them) please come take them from the media office. We are starting to recycle the white boxes, so act fast!

Book Requests

I created a form to collect book wishes! If there is a specific title (or many titles) or a topic that you wish we had more books on please click the link below and fill out the form.

I will also be adding this request form to my website and
email signature for any future requests.

Junior Librarians

Select 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders have been chosen to be Junior Librarians. These students have been assigned a morning, once a week, to assist in the media center. If you have not done so already, please send home the half sheet of paper with the students that were selected. These students will be trained in all areas of the media center. Please encourage your students to seek out their help when visiting the media center in the morning between 8:45 and 9:15. They'll be the ones wearing the bright green "ask me for help" signs! :)

Here is the schedule:

Monday - Blanchard, Cole, Lewis, Murdy

Tuesday - Wilson, Himbry, Madlon, Martin

NC Wise Owl

NC Wise Owl got a face lift!! It will look totally different when you click on the link... but don't worry... it still has all the same awesome resources!

If you are not familiar with it, or always forget we have it, NC Wise Owl is AWESOME!

This site is free for any student, teacher, or parent in North Carolina and gives you access to some great FREE resources. If you or your students are at school there is no login needed. At home the password is wiseowl15. Each month we'll highlight one of the resources found at www.ncwiseowl.org.

This month's spotlight is on.... America the Beautiful (GO)!

America the Beautiful is part of the Grolier Online resources. When you click on the link it will take you and your students to a map of the United States. From there you can click on any state and it will take you to an article about that state. Each article contains the following sections: Introduction, History, Geography, Economy, Culture, Government, Cities, Spotlights, Profiles, Timeline, Word Find, What Do You Know?, Project Ideas, and Further Reading. There are also Fast Facts, Pictures and Maps for each state. Grolier also offers a Teacher Resource section that has a Teachers' Guide, Activites, and Organizers. Talk about a great resource for doing state research!
