Northwest High School Families,
We have a shorter week ahead with no school tomorrow, Monday, February 21 in observance of Presidents' Day. Additionally, we hope students will join the staff in celebration of Tuesday, 2.22.22 and wear a tie, a tee and/or a tutu. Ties, Tees and Tutus for 2.22.22! The interim of the third marking period is quickly approaching so it is important that students are paying close attention to their grades and attendance. As always, if a student needs support in any class, they should reach out directly to their teacher.
There are several updates and new information included in this week's newsletter. Be sure to check out every item below but as usual, an overview is included. Our celebration of Black History Month continues as we head into the spirit week sponsored by our African Student Association! Be sure to check out the specifics of the week in the newsletter.
In this week's newsletter, you can find resources for mental wellness and supports, Northwest's Black History Month events, this week's college and career information, important spring athletics registration information and Winter post-season schedules, an important update from MCPS which came out on Thursday, February 17, important updates regarding Athletics and extracurriculars, after prom opportunities, the Northwest Mulch fundraiser and an opportunity to fund raise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).
There are also some important reminders including the Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention Lessons, a message regarding MCPS' Anti-Racist Audit, a way to buy our Northwest Yearbook, the February message from our Student Member of the Board, summer Rise opportunity, information about the MCPS High School Regional Application Programs, the start of semester 2 of High School Plus, common sense media program, AP exam information, the Choose Respect PSA video contest, obtaining second semester parking spots for students, a way to say thank you to staff, how to report bullying/harassment and a few other items.
Please continue use this FORM to report positive COVID-19 cases in students or staff. Any individual who tests positive MUST isolate for 10 days (regardless of vaccination status or symptoms). Please view the isolation and quarantine calculator to determine return to school date.

Financial Aid REMINDERS & Resources for the Class of 2022
THE HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE CAREER VISIT SCHEDULE:. Virtual and in-person visits currently on the schedule are published on our Google Event Calendar. All visits will take place in the College Career Information Center, Room 126. Students will need to bring their Chromebook and headphones for the virtual visits. NEW: Therapy Dogs VISIT!
Therapy dogs will be available for visits and comfort on Wednesdays at lunch in front of the counseling office and/or the main office, beginning March 2nd. All staff and students are encouraged and welcome to visit.
NEW: Spring Athletics Registration AND Winter Sports Post Season Schedule
Registration for spring sports is underway. Parents/guardians register students in ParentVue by February 27th. Mrs. Tyler, our Athletics Specialist, keeps an updated list posted outside her office where students can check their status. Please have your student check the list and see Mrs. Tyler if they are not approved to determine why. Don't wait until the last minute to register in case there is a problem! Remember, students must have a current physical and proof of vaccination or an approved medial or religious exemption form. Also, many students who participated in the abbreviated spring season last year have physicals expiring in late March or early April. If you are unsure of your date, please email Mrs. Tyler at Jody_D_Tyler@mcpsmd.org. Spring practices begin March 1st. Tryout times and locations will be posted on NorthwestAthletics.org soon!

NEW: Things to Know from Thursday, February 17
Here are seven things to know for today, Thursday, Feb. 17. They include updates on the recommended FY 2023 operating budget, information about COVID-19 rapid test kits, inclement weather make-up plans, safety and social-emotional supports and more.
Strategic Additions to the FY 2023 Operating Budget Investments Discussed with the Board of Education
On Feb. 14, the Board of Education received an update on the FY 2023 recommended operating budget, including:- additional investments to support security in schools;
- Supports for students’ and staff’s social-emotional well-being and mental health, including telehealth services;
- Communications and community engagement enhancements;
- and more.
You can view the discussion online and review the presentation. These investments would be supported by:
- The annual MCPS operating budget;
- One-time funds provided through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER);
- Blueprint for Maryland’s Future (also known as Kirwan), which provides money to school districts in targeted areas.
Masks Still Required in MCPS Schools and Offices
Although Montgomery County is scheduled to lift mask mandates after Feb. 21, MCPS currently is maintaining its mask mandate for students and staff. The school system will review all available information and consult with local health officials about any change to this mandate in the coming days. Any changes to guidance will be communicated immediately.COVID-19 At-Home Rapid Tests Being Distributed
MCPS continues to distribute rapid test kits to all students and staff every 3 weeks through the month of March. These kits are an important part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus.VIDEO: directions for use of COVID-19 rapid test kit
Staff and parents of students are reminded to report positive test results through the MCPS COVID-19 Reporting Tool. (Reminder: these are nasal (nose) rapid test kits, please refer to the directions included in the kits prior to use)
Inclement Weather Day Make-Up Plan to be Released Next Week
MCPS closed schools due to inclement weather on Jan. 3, 4, 7 and 20, in addition to adding a planned system wide closure on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021. These closures mean that MCPS must make up three instructional days to meet the required 180 days of instruction. As part of the ongoing well-being, safety, and security review in all MCPS schools, district staff will be engaging parents from various school communities in the coming weeks in parent interest forums.

Upcoming Antiracist Audit Survey Reminder
All students in Grade 4 through Grade 12 will take an age-appropriate, anonymous survey in school between March 1 and March 31. Each school will decide on the date to administer the survey.- To opt your student out of this survey, complete this form and submit it no later than 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 21, 2022.

No MCPS Schools Entering 10-Day Virtual Learning Period
No schools will transition to virtual learning next week. MCPS will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 and school operations on in-person learning and, if necessary, identify schools for temporary virtual learning.
NEW: Extracurricular Activities Update!
MCPS welcomes spectators at full capacity for ALL MCPS events (athletics, Fine Arts, extracurricular activities, etc.).
Student Groups across MCPS -
Student groups from across MCPS may gather to participate in cross county events (i.e. meetings, conferences, rehearsals, etc.) beginning Friday, February 18.
All participants must follow the required MCPS mitigation practices and any additional expectations required of the host or venue.
All Field Trips -
- Co-curricular field trips during and beyond the instructional day are approved to continue.
- Local field trips (within 100 miles of CESC) may continue.

NEW: NWHS After Prom Party
Northwest will once again host an all-night after prom party to keep our kids safe and off the roads on prom night! This incredible event includes food, games, DJ, entertainment, activities, tons of prizes and giveaways, and more! In order to make this event possible, we need to raise a significant amount of money. We encourage all families to DONATE $20.22 for 2022 (or any other amount) to support this amazing event! It’s important for ALL grade levels to contribute as these juniors and seniors are your children’s classmates, teammates, neighbors, and friends.

NEW: NWHS Mulch Fundraiser
Two Ways to Support!
1. We have partnered with Potomac Garden Center for those who are interested in buying mulch and supporting NW. They have graciously offered a program where we will receive 15% of all mulch sales when you mention Northwest at the registers during checkout throughout the month of March. This includes bulk mulch by the cubic yard in natural, dyed brown and dyed black and bagged mulch (Master Gardener 3 cu ft, Dyed Brown and Black 2 cu ft, Cedar Mulch, Mini Nuggets and Silver Dollar Nuggets).
They do offer delivery ($50 charge to 20878 and 20874), and also offer a subscription service called PGC+ for $129/year, which gives subscribers free delivery with a $100 minimum purchase for the year as well as a 20% discount on most products (excluding bagged Master Gardener mulch and other items as listed at pgc.plus).
Unfortunately, website sales will not be credited to the NWHS Boosters. We encourage you to stop in to the store as they have a great selection of items Plus, you get to support a local business!
2. We do realize that you may have other mulch plans this year, but you still want to help Northwest. We have set up a direct donation form if you would like to support our community.
NEW: Survivors for a Cure - Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
I’m Katie Gardiner and if you didn’t know already, this year I decided to lead Team “Survivors for a Cure” in the LLS Students of the Year Campaign!! Our team has multiple Northwest students on it - Sarah Varghese, Dhillan Talreja, Kaitlin Lynch, and Abby Kessler as well as two students from Quince Orchard, one is a fellow Cancer survivor I met in chemotherapy! As a survivor, and knowing multiple people who have battled, and unfortunately lost their battle with blood cancers, I want to do as much as I can to raise awareness and find more research so we don’t have to lose our loved ones. My goal over this 7 week program ending on March 12th is to raise $50,000 but I need your help! I want to involve Northwest High School as much as I can because I know together as a community we can raise money to save lives!
February 22 through March 4, we are going to have a spare change drive. If you have any spare change or even want to give more please go to the office to drop that change off! Let’s see which class can donate the most to STOP CANCER!!

REMINDER: Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention Lesson
Northwest High School’s Counseling Department will be delivering a lesson related to mental health awareness and suicide prevention during an English class next month. The lessons are from the Signs of Suicide (SOS) youth suicide prevention program that has demonstrated an improvement in students’ knowledge and adaptive attitudes towards suicide risk and depression, as well as a reduction in actual suicide attempts. All students in Grades 9 through 12 will participate in a class lesson which includes video clips and/or discussion. After the lesson, students will fill out a form to let the school’s Student Well-being Team know if they would like to talk to someone to get help for themselves or a friend. Students also will receive a handout of school, local, and national resources that are available to support mental health needs. If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s counselor at 240-740-7080.

REMINDER: Summer RISE Opportunity
Calling all rising MCPS 2022-2023 juniors and seniors interested in learning about a career during the month of July. The MCPS Partnerships Unit will begin taking applications to participate in the 2022 Summer RISE program at 8AM on Wednesday, February 16. Summer RISE provides students with a four-week/50-hour, career-based learning experience and introduces students to high-demand career options that match their interests. Students must be available between July 5th through July 29th. Student registration will close at 5PM on Friday, March 4.

REMINDER: MCPS High School Regional/Countywide Application Programs
In addition to the various academic programs at Northwest High School, Grades 9, 10 and 11 students may be eligible to apply to MCPS High School Regional/Countywide Application Programs for the 2022-2023 school. Information about the various program offerings and application process may be found here. Application programs include, but are not limited to, career-technical programs at Edison HS, Seneca Valley HS, and Gaithersburg HS. Students who participate in these programs typically split their school day between Northwest and their off campus program. Interested students should complete the Round 2 Application no later than February 18, 2022. If you have any questions about these programs, please reach out to your student’s counselor.
REMINDER: High School Plus Semester 2 starts February 8
The spring semester of our High School Plus (HS+) program starts Tuesday, February 8. Our HS+ program offers core courses required for graduation for students who did not earn credit in previous semesters. Students may earn credit recovery or repeat an entire course in the following first semester courses:
- English 9A, English 10A, Honors English 11A, Honors English 12A
- Honors Biology A, Honors Chemistry A, Honors Physics A
- Geometry A, Algebra 1A
- Honors U.S. History A, Honors NSL Government A, Honors Modern World History A
Counselors are currently working with students to get them registered in classes, which are free of charge. Classes are held 2:45 pm – 4:15 pm on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please have your student contact their counselor if they are interested.
REMINDER: Common Sense Media Program
Now in 2022, realistic expectations and understanding of the impact of technology use is important for all families. Our students are tech savvy but still need direction and practice making positive choices with technology and social media. Whether they are 8 years old or 18 years old, finding a way to connect and check-in on a regular basis about technology use, screen time, actions online, and overall social media access and use is important.
Common Sense Media has several tools available to support families and students on having conversations. Students will receive a variety of lessons on these topics through the school year in 9th and 10th grade. NEW: Advanced Placement (AP) Exams
Student AP exam payments must be paid in full by March 25th. Each exam is $96. Fee reductions are available for those who qualify. For information about online payment, and fee reductions, please click on the AP Exam Payment quick link on the Northwest website. Payments can also be made in person at the business office. REMINDER: Choose Respect PSA Video Contest
MCPS is currently hosting the annual Choose Respect Montgomery 2022 PSA video contest. The contest is an opportunity for students to share their ideas by creating a 60-second video about dating violence. The top five videos will be awarded with prizes and be voted on by middle and high school students for a Fan Favorite Award and viewed on the Montgomery County Public Schools and Choose Respect Montgomery webpage (https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/fjc/chooserespect/). The deadline to submit videos on the Chose Respect Webpage is February 28. In addition, the RespectFEST virtual festival (March 21-26, 2022) and in-person festival (March 27, 2022) serve as opportunities for students to earn SSL hours for student participation and advocacy.
REMINDER: Second Semester Student Parking
As a reminder, beginning Tuesday, January 25th, all cars driven by students must display a valid 2021-2022 Full Year or Semester 2 parking permit and must be parked in their assigned space. Cars that are parked in the incorrect space or do not have a valid parking permit may be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense. Students who purchased a first semester parking permit, plan to drive the remainder of the school year and have not yet purchased a second semester permit, should go to the business office, Room 322, before school, during lunch, or after school. A new application is not necessary. Any student who currently has a first semester parking permit and does not purchase a second semester permit by the due date will forfeit their spot effective Tuesday, January 25th. Students who do not currently hold a parking permit but would like one for the second semester may apply by filling out an application also located in the business office. As a reminder, students must be cleared of all obligations and have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA in order to be eligible for a student parking permit.

Northwest Class Spirit!
It's a long-standing tradition at Northwest for each grade to wear their assigned CLASS COLOR on Pep Rally days! Each class sits in a designated section at the rallies so make an impact for YOUR CLASS by wearing your grade level color and make your presence known! Although participation with wearing class colors is optional, we hope you will join in the FUN!
The grade level colors are as follows:
Freshmen (Grade 9): YELLOW
Sophomores (Grade 10): GREEN
Juniors (Grade 11): RED
Seniors (Grade 12): BLUE
You can wear any clothing and/or accessories in your assigned color as long as you adhere to the school dress code. You can opt to wear clothing that you already own in your grade level color, you can purchase a shirt from the PTSA/Booster Club website for $4: http://www.nwhsptsa.org/shop (available sizes and quantities are limited), or you can purchase a T-shirt in your color at Michael's or Joanne's (the cost is usually around $4) and personalize with fabric markers or paint pens! The possibilities are endless to show your #JagPride!
