January News from Mrs. Brummel-PE

Happy New year! I hope all of you had an enjoyable holiday break! I have a couple of announcements from the Physical Education Department here at Harrison Elementary.

First, we have been offered an opportunity to perform the “Whip and Nae Nae” Cardio Version Dance at the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions. I would like to extend an invitation to all of my DHE 3rd and 4th grade students to join me on January 14 at 5:00 pm at Missouri State University to provide the halftime entertainment for that game. We will be demonstrating the fitness cardio dance that all the students have learned in P.E. Class. I will have more details coming soon but at this point I know that all students preforming will get in Free to the tournament with their DHE shirt and enjoy the basketball games before and after performing.

Secondly, I will have a student teacher from Missouri State University beginning this month. Erica Inman is a student at MSU and will be experiencing life as a P.E. teacher at DHE this semester.

3rd and 4th grades students now have access to their Physical Education CANVAS page. They can view their current FITNESS TEST scores, join in discussions, view announcements, and see the upcoming schedule of events.

January News from Mr. Zimmerman-ART

Welcome back to a great start this new year! Here is what’s on the menu for art this month. Kindergarten will use the story of the Old Woman that swallowed the sea to help make decisions about layering objects by size smallest to greatest. First grade will begin their water color unit beginning with the basics of color, moving through painting shapes, and then working on original paintings. Second grade will learn about the elements of a cityscape. This lesson gives them an opportunity to practice architecture as they design their own buildings. Third grade will learn about reflective symmetry using oil pastels. The lesson teaches the students about the layering property of the oil pastel and how to mix new colors. Finally, our fourth graders will begin a still life unit with emphases on shape and value. Students will be challenged to accurately sketch 3D forms and then correctly apply value shading to them.

January News from Mrs. Fetzer-Music

Happy New Year! This month, our 4th grade classes hit the road running! They will be busy getting ready for their performance, “Heartland Hoedown,” which they will present on Thursday, 2/4, at 7 pm in our gym. We will be concentrating on everyone learning their special parts and putting our show together with run-throughs, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals. Resources to help them prepare have already been added to our Canvas site and more are coming soon! 4th Grade Parents: please sign up for our 4th Grade Performance Remind list. It’s quick and easy and will keep you informed. [Text @dhe4music to 81010.] Also, once students have requested special parts next week, a Before and After School Special Rehearsal Schedule will be sent home. If at all possible, please arrange for your student to come early or stay late for their rehearsals. 4th graders also are invited to audition for the SPS Elementary Honor Choir which takes place in April. Information about this exciting opportunity will be coming home soon, as well!

3rd, 2nd and Kindergarten classes will work on their Composer Study. They will watch an excellent movie, made specifically for children, about their composer, review details about the composer, and get to visit stations that enhance their learning and retention of the information they have learned. 1st grade classes will be creating a music culture report using the app AdobeVoice and then they will begin working on their performance, “Stone Soup!” It will take place on April 7.

January News from Mr. Rowell- Computer Lab

This month the kindergarten classes will be working on Dreambox and improving their computer skills. First grade will be learning how to create Google Slides as a group which ties into their 1st grade animal project. 2nd grade students are learning how to create posters with Canva. 3rd and 4th grade students are working on Genius Hour projects.

1st Grade Teachers Teaching Habitats

Our awesome 1st grade team is always having fun. For the month of January they are teaching students all about habitats. They even decorated their classroom to reflect a particular habitat. They are certainly a creative bunch!
