THE ARCITECT OF FAIRYTALES
Neuschwanstein. Herrenchiemsee. Linderhof. What do all of these have in common? They are all castles and palaces built by “Crazy” Ludwig II during his reign as King of Bavaria. Ludwig II only commissioned them to be constructed, however. The architect of these three crown jewels of Germany was Georg von Dollman. Von Dollman was born October 21, 1830 in Ansbach, Germany and he died on March 3, 1895. Schloß Linderhof was built in neo-Baroque style and doesn’t quite fit into Bavaria’s mountains. Schloß Neuschwanstein was intended to suggest the medieval Teutonism of Richard Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser (1845). Schloß Herrenchiemsee was planned as a replica of the French royal residence at Versailles. Von Dollman’s masterpieces endure to this day, are the stuff of fairytales, and attract thousands of tourists to Germany’s south. If you are planning a trip to Germany, these three castles should be at the top of your destination list. Alles gute!
