2017 OASC ELECTION PROCESS CONSIDERATIONS
Each year the OASC conducts elections of their officers at the annual state convention. The election process is reviewed on an annual basis. After much discussion and input the Executive Board elected to implement a new election process that did not include skits. These changes were implemented for the following reasons:
To create equity amongst schools:
Each school was faced with financial burden to provide props, lighting, costumes, etc. for their skit. For smaller schools or schools in rural areas, the limitation to resources creates an unfair disadvantage.
To provide a more educational and realistic election process:
The board was not able to identify any other state student organization that utilizes a skit to elect their officers. Nor was the board able to find other state student council organizations that utilizes a skit format. As an organization, our intent is developing young leaders that will be successful in their future endeavors. The new process will help young leaders in their development in running for positions in the future by giving a speech. At no time in their future will our delegate be asked to use a skit to be elected to an officer position of an organization.
To create an election system based on the merit of a candidate and not on the talent:
It became a concern that candidates were not being elected based on their strengths in regards to the position for which they were running. Instead, candidates were being elected based on their talents as a singer, dancer, performer, etc. Sponsors had expressed concern the election process had become a “talent show”. It is the goal of the board to create an election process that will emulate election processes faced by young leaders in the future.
