Classroom Happenings
Wonders:
During the first three weeks of school, our class will be focusing on key skills that will provide a strong foundation for our learning this year. Last week our class focused on reading stories and talking about the different ways that each of us is special. We talked about how we look, act and our interests. We drew pictures of ourselves, working on the details that make us special. This week our class will be reading stories and talking about how families love and help each other.
Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing at school.
My Words to Know
High-Frequency Word: I and Can. Have your child find the word I in a favorite book. Then ask your child to write the word. Think of sentences together using the word I. Write each sentence and have children circle I. Write the word can and read it with your child. Then ask your child to write the word. Think of sentences together using the word can. Write each sentence and have children circle can.
Category Words: names Write your name using capital and lowercase letters and read your name with your child. Point out the capital letter at the beginning of each name. Then write the names of some other family members and friends. Read them and have your child repeat each name.
Letter Identification: Aa-Hh Write each capital letter A-H on slips of paper and mix them up. Then write each lowercase letter a-h on slips of paper and mix them up. Have your child select a capital letter, say its name, and then find its matching lowercase letter.
Math:
To build and re-enforce our math skills we do Calendar every morning. We talk about the date, the day of the week, how many days we have been in school and the weather. We also sing songs about counting to 100, the days of the week, the months of the year and number recognition. Please practice these same skills at home to extend your child's learning. Math homework will start coming home this week.
Important Information
-Testing went really well last week. We will be testing again on Thursday this week. Thank you for your support at home.
-B.E.E. Binders are coming back everyday!! Awesome!! I have inserted practice sheets for you to use at home with your child. We practice letters and sounds every day, we write letters using D'nealian handwriting, your child must write and recognize numbers to 30 by the end of kindergarten and count to 100 by 1's, 10's, and 5's. Please practice these skills at home.
-Two homework sheets came home last week. I will send 3 sheets home each week due by Friday. Homework is an extension of our school day. Practicing good habits will build responsibility and understanding of the importance of working hard to reach a goal. I will always return homework with a star or smiley face to acknowledge your child's hard work.
