Winters' Wildcat News
A Title 1 Community School - February 2019
What is RICAS and why is it important?
RICAS gives teachers, students, and families information about student progress, school performance and how to improve teaching.
When will my child take the RICAS?
The RICAS ELA window is from April 1, 2019 through May 3, 2019. The RICAS mathematics assessment window is from April 2, 2019, through May 24, 2019. Each district and school will determine its own testing schedule within these windows.
How long are RICAS assessments?
Total testing time varies by grade. Students complete sessions over several days or weeks.
What types of questions will my child be asked?
Students will answer different types of questions to measure understanding in ELA and mathematics, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, "technology enhanced" questions like drag-and-drop, and written responses/essays.

Local Food Ambassadors Lunch Tasting
Local Food Ambassadors
Mrs. Brinlee, parent volunteer, Mrs. Kim Grant, Pawtucket School Committee Member, Kelly Swanson from RI Healthy Schools Coalition, Tara Charrette from Aramark, and Mrs. Surmeian were at all three lunches on Wednesday, January 30th for Winters' second Local Food Ambassador tast testing.
It's winter so RI farms have limited options for crops, but we got potatoes served them au gratin style (with cheesy sauce), and the kids LOVED them! They were so adventurous trying a new food.
Ask your child about the sample served at lunch.
Check out the RECIPE to cook it at home:
Au Gratin Potatoes
Ingredients:
3 Tbsp butter
3 Tbsp flour
1.5 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
2 cups 2% milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
5 cups thinly sliced and peeled potatoes (about 6 medium)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Stir in flour, salt and pepper until smooth. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir 2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in cheese until melted. Add potatoes.
Transfer to greased 2 qt baking dish. Cover and bake 1 hour. Uncover and bake 30-40 minutes or until potatoes are tender. If desired, top with additional pepper.

Session 2 of BOKS Begins February 25th
The FREE BOKS classes increase opportunities for children and their parents to be physically active and gain nutritional knowledge; in turn creating healthy, life-long habits. BOKS classes are also focused on fun and getting moving around in a friendly, non-competitive way. Each 40 - 50 minute before school class consists of:
A warm up
A skill of the week
Running
Relay Races
Obstacle Courses
Group Games
Nutritional Tips
When is BOKS?
BOKS session 2 will run Monday - Wednesday from 7:20 am to 8:10 am for grades 3-5 at Henry J. Winters. The Winter/Spring program will begin on Monday, February 25, 2019, and will continue through Wednesday, May 22, 2019. Students can then participate in the free breakfast program at 8:10, before going to their classrooms.
The BOKS session for K, 1 and 2 will run Thursdays and Fridays from 7:20 am to 8:10 am at Henry J. Winters. The Winter/Spring program will begin on Thursday, February 28, 2019, and will continue through Friday, May 24, 2019. Parents will be responsible for ensuring their child arrives to BOKS on time. Being late to BOKS is not an option. After 7:20, students will not be allowed in the building again until 8:10 when breakfast supervision begins. There is no supervision for students who arrive late and are waiting outside until breakfast.
Please return the BOKS sign up sheet to Mrs. Surmeian ASAP. Any questions, please send an email to surmeianj@psdri.net or call the school at 401-729-6272.
