News & Notes from Josiah Haynes Elementary School

Principal's Message
With the turn of another page of the calendar, we see the pace of the school year ramp up with fervor. This year, there's an added sense of cautious normalcy that is spurring us to take advantage of the warmer weather and the ability to be together. See below for some updates and reminders, as well as news on upcoming events.
MCAS Returns Next Week
Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will start statewide testing beginning next week. Our students are well prepared—our teachers and curriculum work in service of this. Students are familiar with the structures of the test. We don't "test prep," but rather engage students in high-quality teaching and learning every day along with limited previews of what they'll see on the test so they'll be best prepared to show what they know.
Celebrating National Assistant Principal Week
We join the nation's schools in celebrating National Assistant Principal Week beginning Monday. At Haynes, we're so lucky to have BETH MURRAY helping to lead our school, supporting students, staff and families. Thank you, Mrs. Murray, for all you do for Haynes!
Complete the Haynes Equity Survey
If you haven't already, please take a moment to complete the equity survey. The survey will be open until April 14.
Reminder to Stay Home When Sick
We're seeing an increasing number of students come to school when they are not feeling well (think pre-COVID colds and the like). Doing so compromises their ability to learn, as well as that of those around them. Students support the school rules of being SAFE and RESPECTFUL when they stay home when sick.
Not Returning to Haynes?
If you're not returning to Haynes for grades 1-5 next year, please contact Marcy Sawin at marcy_sawin@sudbury.k12.ma.us. This will help us in planning for the upcoming school year.
Going to Be Absent or Late? Need to Change a Dismissal Plan?

Food Pantry Collection Next Friday
Our monthly collection for the Sudbury Food Pantry will be NEXT Friday, April 8. This week at School Meeting, students will get a virtual inside look into the work the Sudbury Food Pantry does. Thanks for your continued contributions on Friday mornings at arrival each month.
I look forward to seeing you in and around Haynes School!
Sincerely,

Curtis Angels' Cradles to Crayons Collection April 3-8
From April 3-April 8 2022, Ephraim Curtis Middle School is hosting a clothing drive to benefit children in need in Massachusetts. All items collected will be donated to Cradles to Crayons, a non-profit organization that provides essentials to Massachusetts children who are homeless or in low-income households.
The collection drive has been organized by ECMS 8th grader Bella Reith, with help from the Curtis Angels. Bella was chosen to represent Sudbury this year at the annual statewide community service and leadership initiative, Project 351. As part of her role as a Project 351 Ambassador, Bella has been asked to coordinate a clothing drive in her own community.
Cradles to Crayons is requesting gently used or new clothing and shoes for children ages 0 to 12 years old. For health reasons, the charity is asking that donated socks, pajamas, and underwear be new. Collection bins for clothing and shoe donations will be located in the Curtis lobby and the lobbies of the elementary schools. If you would like to offer a cash or check donation, it will be used to purchase new children’s clothing. Checks should be made payable to Cradles to Crayons. Cash and check donations can be left at the ECMS main office.
If you have questions about the collection drive, please contact Ivar Henningson, Curtis Angels Faculty Advisor, or me at
