Spring Festivals, Field Trips and Favorite Traditions @ FLMS
We made it through what seemed like an exceptionally long, cold winter and are ready for the warm, sunny days and smiling faces that come along with spring.
I am so proud of our students who have been steadfast throughout the year -- they come to school everyday ready to learn new things, meet new people, and make good choices along the way. For this, they need to be celebrated. And that is what we do every spring at Fox Lane Middle School.
We celebrate the accomplishments of our student-scholars through hands-on experiences that galvanize their class work. We celebrate the talent of our student-musicians at concerts in awe of their performances, and we celebrate the dedication of our student-athletes who showcase their skills at their modified and high school games.
We hope you too can share in the joy that these celebrations bring to our students and staff!
Best,
Mary Harrison
Principal of Fox Lane Middle School
FLMSers Celebrate the World Around Us on Field Trips
Throughout the school year, students are introduced to middle school science through an integrated earth and environmental curriculum. The 'big ideas' of science are studied through units on water quality, cycles, weather and climate, and ecology. During the exploration process, students find that this theme is wide ranging and will mean something different to everyone.
7th Graders Release Trout in Leonard Park
6th Graders Hike in Westmoreland Sanctuary
In May, our 6th graders get back to nature and will learn how to read a map and compass and navigate an orienteering course. Students will also take a hike down to Bechtel Lake where they will learn about local pond ecosystem, how to tell if a pond is healthy, and learn about the insects and animals that inhabit the pond and the role they play in our environment.
6th Grade Myth Fest Celebrates Greek Mythology
In early April, FLMS saw the return of Myth Fest. This time honored tradition is the culminating activity for 6th grade students during their study of Greek mythology. Dressed as their favorite gods, goddesses and other mythological characters, students had the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge in a series of games, participate in a costume competition, and spend time together as a 6th grade cohort.
Capstone 2.0 - Thinking Outside the Fox to Celebrate Learning
This year, all of our students will embark upon a learning journey that engages a personal passion and is reflective of past learning, applicative to current learning and suggestive of future learning.
This year, the journey is a celebration of learning that encapsulates the Capstone fundamentals of being interdisciplinary, thought-provoking, creative, and focuses on building communication skills, both written and oral. The students will be working on their Capstone projects during Homebase in May. They will showcase their efforts in symposiums that will be held in June. The overall goal is to bring back the joy in learning and give them an opportunity to share their learning with peers.
