The Mighty Cub
September 7 - September 15
Our Mission
Our Cultural Vision
Hurricane Harvey
I hope that as the days progress you are beginning to return to normalcy and establish routines as difficult as it may seem. For some of our staff members the road to recovery after the storm will be long and hard. We are saddened to inform you that some of our staff has been affected by the storm including T. Lasker, D. Morrison, A. Garcia, H. Hafizi, G. Miller, and M. Downer. Thankfully they are all physically well but working at getting through the hardship of rebuilding. Many of us were spared from the storm but have family and/or friends that were not so lucky and are going through a very difficult time.
Over the course of the past week our Admin, ILT and Team Leaders made efforts to communicate with you and find out how you were doing. Thank you leaders and specialists for this effort. I stayed in contact with district leaders to ensure our campus was ready to receive staff and students and without damage. We are able to be back this week because of the hard work, passion and dedication displayed by our custodial team. Thank you to our custodial staff for making sure our building is ready for occupancy and especially Celina who went to the building during the storm and stopped leaks from ruining classrooms and other valuable items. Talk about purpose, passion and pride!
The following quote is from the last newsletter:
"AMS is not just a building, it is not just a school. The AMS Mighty Cubs are the people within this building that have one common goal and work together with purpose, passion and pride to achieve it. We are many kinds of people, with many kinds of faces, all colors and all ages, from all times and places, we are the Mighty Cubs!
It is from our greatest struggles that we find our greatest strengths. We are ONE Cub family, let's reach out to those in need if you can.
Are you ready for some football??.... Not yet :(
The Middle School Football Games with Spring Branch on September 11 and 13 have been canceled. The Middle School Coordinators will meet at 9:00 am Friday Morning at Crump to discuss the beginning of the season. More information will be shared at a later time.
Professional Development Sessions
The District has made the decision to cancel all professional development sessions through September 16, 2017. In some cases the session will be rescheduled and you will be notified about the change in date by the sponsor and/or the instructor(s) of the session. You may want to check Eduphoria Workshop to look for other date options available for any course that has been cancelled.

A Helping Hand
To help out our fellow Alief ISD staff members who may have experienced hardships due to Hurricane Harvey, we have set up an Alief ISD staff pantry in the Board Room of the Administration Building.
The pantry is open to staff members in need this Thursday and Friday from 9:00 am-4:30 pm. Items available: toiletries, non perishable food and baby items.
We encourage those in need of these items to stop by and get some supplies. We also encourage you to alert your campus/district colleagues whom you know are in need to stop by as well.
Fire Safety Precautions
EVACUATION – KNOW YOUR WAY OUT
All occupants need to be familiar with a primary and secondary way to evacuate the building from the room where they are.
- Evacuation maps should be posted near the exit doorway at a height and location where the students can easily see it. The map should be individualized showing two ways to get out of the building from that room. Anyone who enters the room for the first time should be able orient where they are and both exit routes from that room on the diagram. A solid and a dotted line or different colored lines can depict the normal and the alternate paths to safety.
STORAGE
Combustible material (i.e. wood, paper, rubber, Styrofoam, foam rubber, cardboard and plastic boxes or anything easily burned) cannot be stored within 24 inches of any ceiling.
- Fire can easily spread into “hidden” ceiling-paneled areas and is difficult for firefighters to extinguish. Items stored close to the ceiling can block water from sprinkler heads trying to put out a fire. Pictures, trophies, plants, decorations, student projects and teaching aids can be displayed within 2 feet of the ceiling. Items placed in boxes or stacked on shelving within the 2-foot distance are considered storage.
Combustibles cannot be stored in electrical rooms, air handling rooms or mechanical rooms.
- Combustibles can easily ignite near energized electrical equipment that is hot or even warm. The air conditioning system and duct work can spread toxic smoke throughout the building.
Items cannot be stored in exit corridors or hallways.
- The hallways and corridors are designed to get all the of people out of the building quickly. Anything that causes a “bottleneck effect” or prevents quick and easy access out can cause serious injury or death.
