Check IT OUT: A NEW TRADITION FOR STONE BANK SCHOOL
On Friday, June 2nd, our school community will begin a new tradition of celebrating the end of a successful school year. All your favorite parts of Games Day and Spring Fling will combine for one epic day: SBS Fest!
Mission Statement: A fun Stone Bank event for the whole school that promotes unity, builds community and celebrates the completion of the school year.
SBS Fest will be an all-day event where students travel with their team to activity stations including Field Day Games, Relay/Olympic Games, Indoor Carnival and Outdoor Carnival. Students will need to bring a cold lunch or order one through school.
Please look for our Sign-up Genius request for parent assistance with games and supervision. We’re also seeking donations/usage of sport wagons, 5-gallon water dispensers, Dixie cups and shade tents for the day.
SBS Student Council will sell tickets for carnival games in denominations of $3, $5 and $10. We are excited about SBS Fest and look forward to celebrating with the whole SBS community! Please keep an eye out for more information.
Please follow this LINK for an opportunity to sign up to help out for our first annual SBS Fest.
We appreciate your willingness to consider volunteering!
Teaching and Learning at Stone Bank
In art classes this spring, students have enjoyed working with clay to hand-build both decorative and functional objects. 4K students explored techniques for decorating clay hearts with wooden stick tools, and 5K students learned how to make pinch pots. Students in 1st through 4th grade used the techniques of slip and score (wetting and scratching clay surfaces) to add handles and appendages to pinch pots to create ceramic baskets, animals, and imaginary creatures.
Students in 5th grade through 8th grade fashioned dragon sculptures, bowls with decorative feet, name plaques, and ceramic masks out of clay slabs, or flat pieces of clay, and snake-like coils, using a variety of processes. At camp Whitcomb, 7th graders created clay whistles by joining together two pinch pots, adding a mouth piece, making a small opening in the body of the whistle, and adding decorations.
While clay work is fun to do, it is also time consuming. Making the projects can take from one class up to several class periods. After the projects are completed, they must thoroughly dry before they are bisque fired in the kiln. This first firing, where the kiln heats to 1944 degrees, bakes all remaining moisture out of the clay. After the bisque firing, students paint two to three layers of different glaze colors on their work, and projects are then put in the kiln a second time for the glaze firing. It’s always rewarding to see how great everyone’s projects look when they emerge from the kiln, brightly colored and shiny, at the end of this long process.
