A Medical Musician's Journey
Healing Body, Mind & Soul through Music
Friday Evening Special Event at the 7th Annual
A Medical Musician's Journey: Healing Body, Mind & Soul
In 2009, musician Andrew Schulman lay in a medically induced coma for two days following complications from major surgery. With vital signs destabilized and in free-fall, his critical care physician declared him to be "toast." The next day, with perhaps hours left to live, Schulman's wife Wendy had an epiphany and sought permission from the medical staff to connect Andrew to his iPod, playing his favorite work by J. S. Bach. What happened next was declared a "medical miracle."
Join us for an evening with Andrew Schulman, a guitarist who has appeared in Carnegie Hall, London's Royal Albert Hall, and the White House, along with Dr. Marvin McMillen, the trauma surgeon and critical care intensivist of 35 years who saved Schulman's life. The two will discuss how they worked together to develop a new specialty in the field of Music & Medicine called Medical Musician. During the course of the evening, Schulman will also perform on the 8-string guitar as he discusses the distinctions between his hospital work and the clinical discipline of music therapy, as described in his recent book, Waking the Spirit: A Musician's Journey Healing Body, Mind, and Soul. To close the evening, the 30-minute documentary film, “Andrew & Wendy,” which has been aired on PBS TV, will be screened and followed by a Q&A.
