Indiana Area Elementary Schools
East Pike - Horace Mann - Ben Franklin - Eisenhower
THE PRINCIPAL CHRONICLES
Families and Community Members,
Our schools are participating in an important district initiative. It is called Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS). Read below to learn more about what PBIS looks like at our Elementary Schools!
What is PBIS at our Schools?
Each school has adopted a unified set of school rules. Similar to the IASD Code of Student Conduct, these rules define our expectations for behavior in our schools. You will see these rules posted throughout the school, and your child learned them during his or her first days at school. Our unified school rules, found in every classroom and non-classroom setting in the school, are a little bit different based on site needs and developmental ages of our students. Scroll down below to learn more about site incentives and to see what a PBIS Matrix looks like at EP, BF, HM, and IKE!
Students use lots of words they learn from Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons to describe their feelings when they receive a Hero Band. These feelings words include: Excited, Happy, Delighted, Confident, Proud, and Surprised!
Teachers use the power of the Ben Buck to reshape some behaviors. And it's working for our littlest learners!! Time is set aside weekly so students can spend their money, too!
Check out this line of Heroes! Our staff members find so many positive reasons to remind students of our expectations for behavior! Students visit Hero Headquarters at 3pm daily to pick a number and get their names on the
Hero Board!
What is 'Positive Behavior Interventions and Support?'
Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.
Fun Lunch Friday
Students are working to earn 20 Piker Points for a fun lunch on Friday. This could be a movie, guest reader, special lunch with table cloths napkins and special plates or other special rewards.
Piker Points
Students are working hard to be quiet during clean up time, staying seated, and making sure that their lunch area is
clean in order to earn 2 Piker Points each day.
Fun Lunch Friday
Each grade level has their Piker Points displayed in the cafeteria. Every homeroom has their own colored Piker Point so the students can count to see how close they are getting to 20!
Our Behavioral Matrixes
As part of our PBIS process, teachers and other staff members use evidence-based practices to increase student learning and decrease classroom disruptions. To keep students on the rules in a positive manner, we do the following when teaching academics and behavior:
- Constantly teach and refer to our school-wide expectations
- Provide students with more praise than correction
- Talk to students with respect using positive voice tone
- Actively engage everyone in the class during instruction
- Use pre-correcting, prompting, and redirecting as we teach
- Look for the positive first and provide positive, immediate, frequent, and explicit feedback

Whether it was in-person or virtually, we want to THANK YOU for joining us at our first Family Engagement Night on November 4th! We hope you took something away from our time together. We are sure you have been engaging in meaningful, fun activities with your child at home, and we truly appreciate your help in helping your child's teacher to meet classwide academic goals! We couldn't do what we do without YOU!
We look forward to seeing you again on March 16, 2022! Be sure to Save the Date!
Each school has a different name for their 'Dollars!" At East Pike, the Pikers earn Piker Points while Heroes work for Ben Bucks across town at Ben Franklin. Our 4th and 5th Graders earn Mann Money at Horace Mann and Dwight Dollars at Eisenhower! When you are talking with your child, be sure to insert the name of the tokens earned in place of the word 'Dollars!"
How many "Dollars" have you earned at school?
Are you saving your money for anything special?
Tell me about a time how you felt when you received a "Dollar?"
What is something you can do to earn "Dollars?"
How did you feel when you saw a classmate earn "Dollars" at school?
