Mrs. White's Kindergarten News
November 14, 2014
Happy Friday!
We had a cold, but fun week. As the weather turns towards winter, I would like to remind everyone that Kindergarten will be going outside for recess every day, unless the temperature is below 20 degrees (including wind-chill). It is also a good idea to look at the extra cloths you are storing in your child's backpack to make sure they are seasonally appropriate. Should we happen to have accumulating snow and the weather is warm enough to go out, only students who are wearing snow boots will be allowed to play in the snow.
Guided Reading: We have started meeting with students in small reading groups. Each week, you should see a small reader come home with your child. They should read this book to an adult at home several times. This book does need to be returned to school the next day so that reading instruction can continue. We had several missing books this week. Please take a look around the house to see if you might have one laying around.
Cafeteria Reminder: The front office would like us to remind families that if you are joining your child for lunch, that you may not bring in "fast-food" for you and your child to enjoy. You are welcome to purchase a lunch from the cafeteria, or pack your own lunch to enjoy.
Toy Drive: Just a reminder that Mr. Bostic is collecting new toy, sports equipment, books, etc for the Marlin Jackson Toy Drive. Please send your donations to school with your child or drop them at the front office.
Canned Food Drive: The Student Council will be holding a canned food drive all next week. Please send non-perishable items to school to help make the holidays brighter for local families in need. The grade level bringing in the most items will earn an extra recess!!!

Reading: We will be finishing up Unit 4, All Kinds of Plants. Our comprehension skill for the week will be identifying the main idea and supporting details in a book. We will be reading about bugs and how they help plants.
Word Study:
Letter of the week: Bb
Sight Word: go
Vocabulary words: partner, garden, insect, pest, weed
Phonological Awareness: blending should and identifying the middle sound.
Writing: We are still writing personal narratives. This week we talked about how writers make time to write words in their books. Sometimes we get caught-up in making great detailed pictures that we forget to add the words that tell our stories.
Science: This week we learned about the parts of a plant, drew pictures and labeled them in our Science Notebooks. Next week we are going to be making a 3D model of a sunflower.
Math: You should be receiving a math newsletter from your child's math teacher.
