LAAMS Lion Student & Family News
December 2021 Vol.13
A Message From Mr. Hernandez
Hello LAAMS Community,
As we begin to prepare for the winter break, I want you to be informed that the grades reflected in the next report card will be the first of two final grades the students receive for each course during the year. I also want to inform you of our Local District’s plan to provide Grade Improvement Sessions during the winter break. The sessions will allow students an opportunity to receive support in completing assignments to improve their grades. Your child’s teachers will have the discretion to withhold the grade and assign an “Incomplete” until all the assignments necessary to improve the grade are submitted within a timeline.
Please take the next few days and inquire about your child’s grades. This is important. Should your child be in jeopardy of failing a class, you are encouraged to communicate with his/her teacher to determine if your child will benefit from participating in the Grade Improvement program. The program will target those students who will receive “D’s” and “F’s” issued at the conclusion of the Fall Semester only.
Additionally, I want to provide you with some tips that might support your child at home. Below is a brief list of suggestions that you might want to implement:
Please continue to monitor your child’s attendance during the day. You can log into the Parent Portal and check both grades and attendance.
· Contact your child’s teachers via email in Schoology or call the school at 323 238-1800 to set up an appointment and/or to have the teacher contact you back.
· Contact your child’s counselor for any additional support you feel your child might need, including referrals.
· Please follow us on social media for updates that may include parent workshops, town hall meetings, Coffee With the Principal, and/or other school-sponsored events.
· Question your child about the day’s schoolwork and assignments. Ask for detailed information about what was learned, how it applies to them, why it is important? If they can articulate, more than likely, they were engaged, attentive, and learning.
· If your child insists that they do not have homework, have them read out loud for 20 minutes (it is best that they select the material they read). Data has shown that students reading at least 20 minutes daily score in the top 10% of the state-administered assessments. For me, this allows my child to tire out and usually gives me a good hour of peace.
Thank you for making LAAMS your child’s school. I am honored to be at your service and welcome your support.

Black Student Achievement Plan Counselor
My name is Ms. Sampson. I'm the BSAP (Black Student Achievement Plan ) Counselor.
I am originally from New York and growing up I ended up moving to Detroit then I ended up in California with my family. I have 2 children who are grown up now. I brought them up as a single mother, so I understand what it's like to have to do things by yourself, and for your children. During that time, I decided to go back to school, and get my AA, BA, & my Master's. It's good to go back to school because your children get to see the highs, the lows, & roadblocks that you encounter during your journey. At the end of that journey when I graduated each time my kids saw how hard I worked and appreciated me more to go after their own journey.
