Clouds of Hope
Centre for Integrated Development Newsletter - March 2017
From Founder’s Desk
We are completing 25 years in this April, 25 years of our commitment towards the people we are living with, 25 years of action to bridge the gap between marginalized people and development, 25 years of striving for the change in the life of deprived people. Our journey started from Gwalior where Cast system, illiteracy, poverty are deeply rooted, I can recall the time when we friends used to discuss these issues in our daily gatherings, these discussions were motivating each others, igniting a spark deep inside our hearts to work for the betterment of the society and people and that spark had enlighten us thus Centre for Integrated Development has formed, since then centre for integrated development have never stopped or halted in between. Our journey is continuing, in this journey towards harmonious, discrimination free society we are not sailing alone, we have the whole community, sailing with us. In this journey we have came across many obstacle weather it was financial issues such as lack of fund or social issues such as conservative thinking of society about girls education, we have overcome all the obstacles. There are many Organization, Agencies and Volunteers who has helped us in overcoming the obstacles. We have started the intervention in the marginalized communities in Gwalior. We pushed ourselves to child labour removal and reduction and now we have brought the significant change in hundreds of lives. Children who were breaking stones in the quarry with their small wounded hand are now holding pen and paper with shiny dreams in their eyes. Children who were spending their precious childhood in digging the heaps of garbage in search of some salable waste are now digging deep in their imagination, drawing the world they want to see on the canvas of life. With our intervention we helped to untangle the little fingers of children from the threads of unwoven carpets. The stain of Tendu leaves are found on the fingers of children rather ink is there on their fingers, proof of the change. Children are weaving dreams not carpets. Our fight for the rights of the primitive tribes has also yielded significant results. We stood strong shoulder by shoulder with the tribe; tribal families who were displaced from the forest have lost their livelihood, home, land. They became the refugee in their own country. We striven for their rights, raised their words to the capital. We supported them in their struggle to get home, agriculture land, satellite schools, Anganwadis, also contributing in the improvement in their health with community health approach. Malnutrition is very rampant in Madhya Pradesh, especially among the tribes, we introduced Community based Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres, Our motive is to not to let any child die because of hunger, we have save hundreds of children and that gives us motivation to work with more coerce. Our vision is to create a harmonious society free from discrimination, offering equity, equality and sustainable development. To make our change sustainable we are strengthening youths, the next generation; the huge expectation of the nation lies in youths and we are working with them to bring those expectations to reality. To live up tour name we are committed towards the integrated development of the marginalized, we are working with men, women, children, youth, adolescents, tribes, minorities, schedule casts, poor, slum dwellers, informal labors, Persons with disability; for their social, economical, physical and mental well being. in last 25 years we did not let our efforts fade, and we will not let our efforts blown away, we will keep acting to bring the change in the lives of deprived, we will keep our commitment alive and together will strive for the change we all want to accomplish our mission to empower communities through awareness, participation and capacity building which lead to a society, based on equity and equality for sustainable development.

25 years of Commitment , Action and Change
Centre for integrated development is penetrating into the marginalized communities to dispense the hope among the marginalized people, we have started our journey back in 1992, and we are completing our 25th year, it has been a great journey between peaks and valleys. We are gratifying to all the people and organization who have been our partner and help us in fortifying the feeble voices of the marginalized community. In these 25 years we have been pulling children out from the dark well of labour, acting as a bulwark between children and marriage, pushing the evils away from the children, holding them strong so that they will not fall into the deathly hollows of social evils such as substance abuse. We are standing firm with the primitive tribes, walking along with them, matching feet and voices, unionizing them so that their words may reach the far ears of the government, we have fought along with the tribes for their land rights. We have also supported government in terms of technical support and capacity building of personals. We are working with the communities like minority; tribes, schedule casts, and some of these communities are very rigid towards their customs and tradition and follow the conservative path which is a bulwark between them and their development. Being a progressive organization we have seen difficulties but due to our humanitarian approach and communitization we have been embraced by the community very warmly which has helped us in helping the community become capable of helping themselves.
It has been a wonderful voyage, we are sailing through the time facing rocks and tempest penetrating the sea of time, this journey has equipped us with joy of bringing the needed change in the life of deprived. In the journey of 25 years we have been fighting with the social evil of gender discrimination, anemia, child labor, child marriage, poverty, ignorance. We were always on the front and our efforts will continue until we win over these social demons.
We are thankful to all people who were the part of our journey, our team, board, volunteers, Government officials, Partner Agencies and the communities we are working with.
Community Based Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers
Sahariya is a primitive tribe, mostly habituated in the northern Madhya Pradesh and western Rajasthan. The way of living of Sahariya has changed over the course of time. Sahariya Tribe is mainly depend on the forest for their livelihood, they collect forest product such as firewood, honey, and edible gums etc. their agriculture income is very marginal but in the present time, most of the Sahariya have become daily wage earner instead of their traditional way of occupation due to ecological conditions. In search for work they are migrating to cities where they are generally exploited by the employer by taking too much of their time and paying less which is making their condition even poorer even after migrating to the city for work.
The changes in tradition have affected their lives, their health status remains downtrodden and their lack of awareness instilled ailments in them. Malnutrition is very rampant among them. CID is working with Sahariya tribe since more than a decade, stood with them in their fight of rights, as we have seen that health related issues are very prevalent among them we have started working on safe motherhood, adolescence and child health in partnering with Tata Education trust. The main part of our intervention is Community Based Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers; we establish these centers with community participation, in these center malnourished children are provided with the supplementary food to compliment their need of nutrition. These centers are executed and monitored with help of community, the food chart is designed according to the locally available food and the need of children’s body, which has resulted in saving lives of the children. Community participation has played a pivotal role in making these NRCs a success. These centers are like rain in the desert for the children, in three years more than 450 children have been pulled out of the hollow of malnutrition.
If the children are very critical and need immediate medical attention, team of CID acts very cautiously to get the children admitted to the government facility for rehabilitation as soon as possible. 58 such children has been referred to the government facility and followed up until their discharge with sound health.
Pooja, 11 month old girl was examine by the CID team and they found that the child is in very critical condition with only 3kg weight and MUAC 7cm. Girl needed immediate attention, our team has informed the concerned authority about the children, ambulance were called, meanwhile women and child development department official reached the place, since there were delay in ambulance, wcd officer has taken the child to the Shivpuri in her own vehicle along with the program coordinator of CID. After the rehabilitation period at NRC weight of girl increased to 4.1kg and MUAC increased to 10cm from 7cm. though she is still recovering of lost health but her life is not at the edge.

Changing Life of People working in Informal Sector
Large population of India still resides in the village and sub urban cities while urbanization is rampant and India and huge migration is seen in last few decades, currently 30% of the Indian population resides in urban, it is predicted that this would increase to about 50% by 20501. India is on infrastructure development spree, suburban areas are becoming the part of main city, in this development a class of population is lacking behind, the people who lives in the slums under the shadow of the glittering infrastructure. The communities who lives in slums mostly are the part of informal sector; informal sector that contributes to about 50% of the GDP and accounts for more than 90% of the total work force of the country.2 though these people making a significant contribution in the economy of the country but still lived a miserable life as informal sector does not provide anything apart from a underpay, it is making their life penurious. Situation in Gwalior is also same; Big Numbers lives in slums who earn their bread and butter from informal sector mainly from carpet weaving and bidi rolling, though there are many social welfare schemes for these people but lack of awareness make them suffer most. Centre for Integrated Development has started an intervention with the support from European Commission and Action Aid. Under this intervention people depended on Informal Economy are being unionized and strengthen about the social welfare schemes and entitlements. Apart from literate them on their entitlements we also went a step ahead to provide vocation training in skills which will make them a part of formal economy or at least will earn them an income which could carry the weight of their needs. Here are two stories of Change.
Raani lives in a slum in Gwalior with her husband and three children, her husband is a tailor earns handful of money, she used to rolls bidi after completing her house hold chores. In bidi rolling the wages are as low as 100Rs for 1400 Bidis, she used to earn around 900Rs a month after investing 5 hours of her daily time. She was approached by CID team; she was made a part of collective, where she was strengthen on livelihood option, she enrolled in vocational training on industrial level stitching with advanced sewing machines. After the training of three month she has equipped with a new skill; With her new skills she is now helping her husband earning as good as 3000Rs per month. She said that now her children have better financial support for their studies and their standard of living is improving gradually.
Life for Punni Bai was not so good; she is a carpet weaver, after working for entire months she gets 1500Rs a month, her husband is a daily wage worker, it is very unlikely for him to get work on each day of month, the collective income of both husband and wife is not enough to run their house with their five children, though two of her elder son also earns petty income, the life is very woeful even after putting all the incomes together. Though they have got BPL card but she said they are not getting any ration from it. she get to know about the carpet weaver registration through CID , with the help of team she was registered with handicraft department, with this registration card she is getting ration and saving as much as 1500 rs a month.
There are many stories where the life has changed with the entitlements like house, ration, pension, and financial help during events such as life, funeral, marriage, Scholarship for children; our team will always strive for the change in life of deprived.

Swachchh Bharat
Everyone of us would like a neat and clean road, streets while we see at corner of streets and on side of the road heap of waste and garbage piling up, despite of the active workforce the clean India was seems far until the Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan was launched by the Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi ji, he launched the program by cleaning a road with broom by his own hands. The campaign embarked with a flash and swiftly covered whole India with zeal and motivation. A spree of efforts has been seen since then, the government bodies have become more active and responsive, an app was launched to add force into the campaign. Centre for Integrated Development has also participated in the campaign, Child Line team of CID has executed various events to carry the flag of clean India in Gwalior city. The events were executed in the month of January 2017.
Child Line organizes many activities to promote the Swachchh Bharat Abhiyaan in Gwalior City, Awareness rally were carried out in the locality where the issue of throwing garbage is high, Hand washing event organized in many schools and communities to promote the hand washing habit among the children. A drawing competition was organized in Shanti Bal Niketan, where the girls drew their thoughts about the Swachchh Bharat and sanitation. These events were organized for five days.
Centre for Integrated Development works for the betterment of the people, and for the betterment of the people we always come forward to assist the programs organized by the government. We are practicing the Green Gwalior Clean Gwalior and are always open to support government in its initiative to help the downtrodden and marginalized communities
From Nothing to Something
People with the physical disability face many challenges during their day to day life, unfriendly environment make it even more challenging for them, though there are initiatives to make the environment barrier free for the people with physical disability to make the environment less challenging for them. Apart from making environment barrier free opportunities should be created for the persons with disability to grow and provide them equal chances to become selfdependent for their needs. Some people are disable from birth and they learn to cope with it since start while it is very difficult for the person to physically and mentally adept the disability caused by accidents. An accident could change a life; sudden absence of ability might put them into further mental trouble, in such circumstances a special care and support required to help them recover from the trauma. Such accident may also result in loss of livelihood.
Centre for Integrated Development is doing an intervention with the help of CBM India, this intervention is focusing on inclusive development of PWD, under this intervention PWD are organized and strengthen on their entitlement and are being helped in attaining them. Livelihood problem is also being addressed through SHG model. The intervention is bringing the change in the life of PWD.
One such story is of Munna Adiwasi, he lives in Medhe Ka Pura village in Tighra gram Panchayats, he was a daily wage worker used to earn bread and butter for his family, and he was the only bread and butter earner. Few years ago in an accident he suffered sever injuries in his legs, a fracture turned out to be fatal made him disable permanently. Through the intervention he was registered as disable so that he can avail the benefits, pension was started through the pension scheme for disables. As he is the only earner of the family he need to start earning but his disability was not allowing him to get back to his previous livelihood option. He was provided with the financial help to start poultry farm on small scale, now the chicks have become full grown roosters and hens, a new livelihood option is open for him, he has already crossed half way by successful raring.
Bal Utsav
Bal Utsav, A funfair for the children of Non Formal Education Centre was organized, in this event 350 children from All 9 NFE centers run by CID took part, A small effort to put the smile on the face of children whose childhood was darkened by the labourhood practices, to revitalize the childhood in these children this event was organized, children had played games, learned crafting and origami. Puppet show was organized to teach children about evils of child labor and about child rights through a fulfilled way. Children participated in sprint, rope skipping and drawing competition. The drawings of the children were reflecting the sensibility and knowledge of children about the social issues; children drew on female infanticide, water harvesting, environment issues, child labors etc. The main attraction of the event was a play performed by the children of the NFE centers why the highlights the environmental issues, our contribution in polluting environment, the play was filled with satires and left all of us with a question in mind that do we really care about environment. Community Based Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre
CID is working with Sahariya tribe and other marginalized community in Kolaras block of Shivpuri district; Malnutrition is very prevalent in this tribal community, thus we intervene with the community based Nutritional Rehabilitation Centres, CNRC is a community based approach towards the managing nutritive support to children and to decrease the prevalence of disease or health event occurred by malnutrition. This approach is not only an effective tool to address malnutrition, but also an effective means of sensitization.
CID executed five CNRC at five highly nutrition deprived villages named “Kanawada, Tudyabad-Haripur, Atruni-Kanchanpura, Degod, Kanchanpura, Babuka, Pachawali” where many children are found severe malnourished the number of malnourished children were as high as 154, children provided with supplementary nutrition in form of high density diet 2 times a day. The remarkable progress was recorded in two month of implementation in children. Families of these children have also adopted the locally available food pattern for their children. All children were out of state of severe malnourishment. Healthy practices such as hand washing, kitchen garden, use of toilets was promoted in the community.
Need Assessment and Stock assessment of IFA-Red and Calcium under project Implementation support to the maternal nutrition program in Madhya Pradesh supported by Micronutrient Initiative.
Need assessment were conducted by the DCs on district and block level and then Stock assessment of IFA-Red and Calcium was conducted in Gwalior and Morena Districts of Gwalior division on monthly basis. DCs informed the CMHO where ever gap are found and request to issue the purchase order against the less stock. Also compiled District wise assessment report submitted to State MI office on monthly basis which was subsequently submitted to State Govt for the effective implementation of NIPI and Lalima Abhiyan in the region. There are adequate stocks available at CMHO stores for pregnant and lactating women but there is a need to keep the stock in flow till beneficiary level. DCs developed the distribution plan for Storekeepers and oriented them during their field visits. But if in any block nil stock is found, then immediate action are taken by DCs and inform to authorities to ensure timely procurement and follow-up simultaneously. Still there is a need to improve supply and reporting chain at field level.
