A Letter from Mr. Hershey

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Thank you to all of our students, teachers, and parents for participating in our student-led conferences these past few weeks. When I was walking through the hallways during conferences, I was thrilled to watch our students take such tremendous pride and ownership in their learning. Some of the benefits of student-led conferences are listed below:

  • When students are able to lead conferences with teacher support, then students are able to evaluate their own performance. This allows students to set goals and be accountable for their learning.
  • Research states that student-led conferences also develops leadership skills among students.
  • Student-led conferences creates a partnership between the home and school that is centered around the student.

We ask our students to identify our strengths, growth areas, and then make a plan to improve in areas of need. At Shiloh Point, we want our students to be self-aware and with the support of their teachers and parents, create a plan so they can be as successful as possible.

Thank you again for all of your continued support and partnership. We couldn't do what we do without you as a partner to support your child's education. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me should you need anything as we are here to serve your family.

Sincerely,

Derrick Hershey

Principal

The 7 Mindsets - Live to Give

The Live to Give mindset teaches the importance of serving others while maximizing our own potential. It tells us that abundance in life is a cycle: that, in order receive love, respect, and financial security, we must first learn to give those things to others. This mindset also teaches us that the greatest gift we can ever give is to find and leverage our unique genius to maximize our positive impact on the world, knowing the good things will be returned to us in kind. In the lessons for this mindset, we guide students to think about the impact they want to make and the legacy they want to leave.

Make sure to ask your student about what "Live to Give" means. For more information, please click here. You will find great resources on this link that will support you as a parent.

Volunteer to Read

Please consider volunteering to read to Shiloh Point's kindergarten and 1st grade students. We are looking for volunteers to sign up for a 30 minute time slot to read to a small group of students. We will have books available for you to read or you can bring your own favorites to share. Please note that this is not an opportunity to read to your own child, but to children chosen by the teacher. If you would like to read specifically in your own child's classroom, please reach out to your child's teacher directly for volunteer opportunities.

HOLIDAY HOUSE INFORMATION

The holiday season will be here soon! In Forsyth County, we have a tradition of working together to take care of those in our community. Three years ago, a partnership between the local businesses, non-profit agencies, faith community, and the school system resulted in the Holiday House program. This year we will continue the Holiday House format where parents can shop for gifts for their children. We hope to provide assistance to fami-lies again this year with the generous support of our faith, business, and school communi-ties.

Who: Parents may sign up children who are 18 or younger (high school aged children must be enrolled in school). Families will need to provide documentation that they receive or are at the income level to qualify for Medicaid or Food Stamps. A current Medicaid/Food Stamps letter or pay stubs may be used for documentation. Children must live in Forsyth County to receive assistance. A donation of $3 per child is appreciated to assist with community needs.

When: Families will need to bring their income documentation when they sign up.

• Thursday, October 4th, Tuesday, October 9th, Monday, October 15th, Friday, October 26th from 10 a.m.until 6 p.m.at The Place of Forsyth (2550 The Place Cir, Cumming GA)

• Saturday, November 10th from 10 am to 2 pm at The Place of Forsyth (2550 The Place Cir, Cumming GA)

Where: Parents may shop at Holiday House at Freedom Tabernacle at an assigned date and time in December. Children three and older will not be allowed in the shopping area. A supervised crafts and activity area will be provided to children while their parents shop for gifts.

*The program is a community initiative, so there is no guarantee of child/family confidentiality.

Partners in Education

The Place of Forsyth

The Place of Forsyth County was founded in 1975 by four Dominican Nuns. The sisters offered the residents assistance with financial needs, clothing, food and even tutoring children. Throughout our 40 years, we have been the catalyst for several agencies that had their beginnings as programs at The Place. Today we are serving the community with financial emergency assistance, clothing, food and many additional support services. In August 2015 we started a workforce development initiative in conjunction with several local agencies to help the under employed and unemployed prepare for and secure jobs. We also embraced an 8 year old service, Focus on Forsyth, which helps needy households through referrals from schools and senior center. Through our services to the community we are changing lives in Forsyth County Georgia.
