Pat Tillman grew up in San Jose California. He was born on Novemeber 6th, 1976 and was the eldest of three brothers. Pat spent his childhood with his brothers exploring california and at the end of thier day they would discuss curent events with thier parents. Pat excelled on the football field while playing at leland high school and leading his team to the central coast Division I fooball championship game. He earned a scholarship to Arizona State University. At ASU, Tillman accomplished so much. The linebacker led his team to an undefeated season to make to the 1997 Rose Bowl game. Tillman was the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and was selected as the ASU Most Valuable Player of the Year in 1997. Tillman earned awards for his performance as a student, winning the Clyde B. Smith Academic Award in 1996 and 1997; the Sporting News Honda Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1997; and the 1998 Sun Angel Student Athlete of Year. After this great college career Pat trained nonstop to become an NFL football player. Through determination and hard work Pat earned himslef a spot on the Arizona cardinalsroster after getting drafted in 1998. Pat over time fought for a spot on the feild and got it. He set a new team record for tackles in 2000. As much as football meaned to pat serving his country meaned more. Pat planned on on enlisting in the U.S. Army with his younger brother, Kevin. This descion drew lots of media attention as Pat turned down a three year, Three piont six millon dollar deal. The events on september 11th 2001 motivated pat to serve his country.He chaned the way he looked at himslef. He needed to something exceptional with his life and joing the Army was that someting. Pat married his High school girlfriend befire enlisting in the Army. His brother and him went on to complete basic training. They joined the army rangers and were deployed to Iraq. He returned tothe states then in 2004 he was redeployed to afgahnistan. On April 22, 2004, Tillman was killed in action while in a canyon in eastern Afghanistan. The first reports indicated that he was shot during a clash with enemy forces during an ambush. There was a lot of controversy involving pats death. Supposedly it was a coverup and he was killed in "friendly fire," and the government tried to cover it up. Pat Tillman was hero and it took a lot of courage to do what he did.
This book has various settings. It jumps around from San Jose california where he grew up playing football to iraq where pat served his country. From Arizona state university where Pat excelled on the football feild and also in the classroom winning awards for both to becoming a army ranger. Then to afaghanistan where pat met his demise in a very controversial death or presumed coverup.
If someone asked me if this book were worth the read I would say yes. It gives you a good insight into pat Tillmas life as a football player and as a army ranger. It goes into a lot of deatil about his football career and time in the army. It takes you a while to get situated to the book but gets better as you go on. One thing this book reveils is the government coverup involving pats death and how the public doesnt really know what happnd. Aside form that Pat is a American hero no matter what happend. It took such bravery and courage to do what he did. Pats Legacy includes a Purple heart and silver star from the army. He was inducted inot the college football hall of fame and his number was retired at Arizona state.
