Announcements of the 2022 Nobel Prizes
The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Svante Pääbo for "Discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution" (10/3/2022).
The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger for "breakthroughs in quantum mechanics" (10/4/2022).
The 2022 Nobel prize in Chemistry was awarded to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless for “the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry.” (10/5/2022).
The 2022 Nobel prize in Literature was awarded to the French author Annie Ernaux for “the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory” (10/6/2022).
The 2022 Nobel prize in Peace was awarded to to human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian human rights organisation Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights organisation Center for "Civil Liberties" (10/7/2022).
The 2022 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig, for "significantly improving our understanding of the role of banks in the economy, particularly during financial crises" (10/10/2022).
Grand Seminar, November 8, 2022

This year's Grand Seminar will be presented by Kartik Chandran, Ph.D., professor of earth and environmental engineering at Columbia University in the city of New York. He is a global leader in sustainable wastewater treatment and engineered resource recovery. Chandran’s work is enabled through understanding and harnessing the biochemical potential and metabolism of microbial communities and developing appropriate technologies towards addressing global environmental and societal needs. He received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2015 (the so-called MacArthur Genius Award) and was named a Fellow of the Water Environment Federation in 2013.

A talk at the intersection of Arts and Sciences “Webb’s First Look at the Universe.”

Joseph DePasquale, the Senior Data Imaging Developer at the Space Telescope Science Institute will present his work on how he turns data sets into the beautiful astronomical images we have recently been seeing from the James Webb Space Telescope. He will also discuss his career path that led him to his position as Senior Science Visuals Developer at the Space Telescope Science Institute.
His presentation, co-sponsored by Fine Arts, Physics, and NAS, will be Tuesday, November 1st from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm in the McManus Theatre.
Join us for A Night with Data Science to explore Data Science in Everyday Life: Applicability, AI, and Other Trends

Following a keynote from renowned industry executive and former Harrah’s CMO, David Norton, MBA ’95, panelists will explore data science from a variety of perspectives across industry and government—how data science is applicable in everyday life, how AI is being used across the world, and other data science trends. A networking reception will precede the event, beginning at 5:30 p.m., with the panel discussion beginning at 6:30 p.m.

A New Minor in Medical Humanities
Loyola launched a new medical humanities minor, entitled Health and Human Experience, this fall. It was created to complement students’ pre-health studies in natural sciences or work as a meaningful unit own its own, relevant to all who are interested in topics such as history of medicine, bioethics, and global health. Health and Human Experience is an interdisciplinary humanities and social sciences minor that prepares students to understand cultural factors in health and delivery of care.
