September 2021 Update
Dear Huskie Pack:
Last week, we welcomed students eager to return to school and learning for another successful year. There is an unparalleled level of excitement and energy on our campus.
Our students are setting the standard for leadership and give us all reason to be grateful and look at the future with hope.
I have had the opportunity to talk with many of our students, parents, and staff since the start of school. Universally, they have high hopes for the year to come, which is full of learning, opportunities to grow, and build friendships. They tend to overflow with cautious optimism.
As we continue to live and learn and navigate through the pandemic, our top priority remains the wellbeing and safety of our students, staff, families, and community. Our plan remains the same as I shared last month. We all want things to be normal, and in some ways, they will be, but there are a few things that have changed.
- Cleaning, we will continue to sanitize/disinfect as part of our day-to-day routine.
- Handwashing, we will continue to encourage everyone to wash their hands regularly.
- Sick people stay home; we will continue to have sick students and staff stay home if they have any signs of sickness/illness.
- Due to federal requirements, while on our school buses, everyone will need to wear masks.
- Visitors and non-essential/non-instructional volunteers will be severely limited within the schools.
- All athletics activities will follow MHSAA directives. HPSD will not independently require the testing of athletes or any other students.
- Remain fluid and make decisions based on data at a micro-level as much as possible. *
*There are a few things that are not currently part of how we plan to start schools, such as face masks in school buildings and social distancing. Masks and quarantines will only be required when required by MDHSS/SCHSS, outside of our control.
As we wrap up our 2nd week of school, we have had a handful of cases of COVID-19 and we continue to review our procedures and protocols. Click here to see our COVID-19 Dashboard. Moving forward, we will have a task force comprised of your elected officials and school administrators to review the implementation of our protocols and procedures.
I hope you’ve marked your calendars for the 2021 Homecoming. We have a full schedule of events planned and will cheer on our football team when the Hemlock Huskies take on the Standish Sterling Panthers on Friday, September 24th.
Thank you for your continued engagement and support of Hemlock Public School District.

SPORTS
Results
8/30/21 - F Volleyball vs. Chesaning - W (16-25, 26-12, 15-13)
9/1/21 - JV Volleyball vs. Nouvel - L (18-25, 23-25)
9/1/21 - F Volleyball vs. Nouvel - L (23-25, 18-25)
9/1/21 - JV Football vs. Corunna - L (0-34) The Corunna team held a height and weight advantage at most if not all positions, and it showed. They are a smart, strong, and disciplined football team. However, the huskies saw great effort and growth from all players across the board. There were standout performances Dawson Doan, Cole Wesener, and Riley Hare on both offense and defense. Next week the huskies go back to work, traveling to Millington for what is sure to be another tough task!
9/1/21 - V Soccer @ Valley Lutheran - L (1-5)
9/2/21 - V CC @ Ithaca - At the Ithaca Yellowjacket Invitational last week on Thursday, the girls’ team finished in 4th place and the boys’ team finished in 5th place. For the girls’ team, freshman Isabella Curry led the team with a 13th place finish in a season best time of 23:31. Girls also running personal record times were Sophia Hauffe, Morgan Walle and Callie Godwin. For the boys’ team, Brody Davis led the team, running his personal record time of 20:07 to finish 24th. Matt Johnston ran his first race of the season, finishing in 36th place. Other Huskies running person record times were Tanner Wesener and Owen Rathbun.
9/2/21 - V Football @ Corunna - L (13-20) Hemlock Varsity Football lost a nail biter last Thursday at Corunna. With several opportunities to take command of the game, the Huskies failed to do so. This defeat against a much larger opponent will serve this team well going forward. Robert Knapik ran for 119 yards and 1 TD while Bryce Murphy continues to impress with 6 receptions and 141 yards receiving with a 77 yard TD reception that tied the game in the 3rd Quarter. TVC Championship level action will be on display next Friday at Hemlock as the Millington Cardinals visit in a pivotal contest.
