bits and bytes
How much the RAM and the hard disk can hold is measured in bytes and bits. There are 8 bits in a byte, 1024 bytes in a kilobyte,1048576 bytes in a megabyte and 1073741824 bytes in a gigabyte. most computers work on base 2 system whitch is also a binary code number system. The reason they use a base 2 system is that is easy to add current electronic technolgy, also they are cheaper than a base10 computer. using a binary system they have to use binary digits. Bit is short hand the word for binary diget. Bits only have to possible vaules 0 and 1 an example is 01 or 11011.
Binary code and the ASCII Character Set
Binary code reprsents computer processer instructions. 8 binary digets can repesent 256 whitch can be letters, symbols or instructions. in the ASCII Character Set each binary vaule between o-127 is given a charcter whitch every letter or symbol has specific number. each charctrer and space is worth one bit. the first 32 vaules are codes for odd things like line feed. space is the 33rd vaule and 34-127 is made of puctuation, digets, lower and upper case letters
