Principal's Message

Hello Hallinan Families,

I miss seeing your children so much - their smiles, hugs, high fives and stories brighten my day! While I am getting the opportunity to see them learn in the virtual environment, it's different and I can't wait to see them in person.

Relationship building is very important to me and our school community. To continue to get to know each other, we are going to start monthly HAL Hangouts in which students will have the optional opportunity to meet with their peers and staff members. Our first HAL Hangout will be on Friday, October 23. K-2 will meet from 11:30 am to 12 pm, and 3-5 will meet from 12 to 12:30 pm. Students are encouraged to bring their lunch and eat while we learn more about each other. Zoom meeting invitations will be sent next week to all student email addresses. Looking forward to seeing your students there!

We are also going to have a Virtual Spirit Week from Monday, October 26 through Thursday, October 29, to celebrate how we have positively navigated our first quarter of our twisty, turvy learning journey. Please see the grid directly below for our themes each day. We can't wait to see your student's creativity shine!

Have a great rest of the week!

Principal Griffiths

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month

Assistive Technology … Did you know?

Technology is changing and improving the school experience for students with dyslexia. Text-to-speech and speech-to-text software, calculators, and note-taking apps are common examples of “assistive technology”. Many of us enjoy audiobooks for pleasure reading, but audiobooks also can serve as a vital piece of assistive technology for those with learning differences such as dyslexia.

With audiobooks everyone can acquire new vocabulary, expand their knowledge and love of books, and enjoy complex or intriguing storylines. Because dyslexics have great listening comprehension, audiobooks enable independent access to school curriculum through “ear-reading” of complex or voluminous textbooks and novels.

The Lake Oswego Public Library has many audiobook services here:

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s learning, please contact the school principal and/or literacy specialist. Another great parent resource would be to contact your school’s Student Services Parent Advisory Committee (SSPAC) representative. Please see here to learn how to contact your school representative.
