Carbohydrates

The best biomolecule!

What do carbohydrates do?

  • Store sugar for a short period of time
  • A long(er)-term storage of starch and glycogen in animals
  • Structural elements in plant cells, being the cellulose within plant cell walls

Monomer and Polymer Examples

Monomers:

  • Glucose(source of cellular respiration in blood)
  • Galactose (sugar in milk)
  • Fructose (sugar in honey)
Polymers:

  • Sucrose (table sugar;glucose+fructose)
  • Lactose (Milk sugar; galactose+glucose)
  • Maltose (digestion product of glucose+glucose)
Carbohydrates as we know them:

  • Sugar
  • Starch
