Important Information

CONSTRUCTION: The construction continues around Aspen Grove, this time inside! If you have been in the school this week you will have noticed that our courtyard/library area is receiving an overhaul. Please be aware of the construction and stay clear. As always, all visitors to the school are required to come in the front door and sign in at the office before moving through the hallways.

Table Talk

his is where I share a few things that we have been learning this week, great discussion for at the dinner table (hence “Table Talk”)!

1) Literacy: This week we were introduced to 2 new characters who will help us remember the letters and sounds that we need for reading and spelling. Have your child tell you one thing they remember about Thick Thorny Thing and Whirling Irving. Then have them tell you what sound these characters likes the best, and what letter or letter combinations represent that sound. Thick Thorny Thing (th) and Whirling Irving (er, ir, ur).

2) Sight Words: Our new sight words of the week were "this" and "were". Feel free to make new flashcards with these words to add to your current collection for Star Homework practice. Have your child teach you why the word "were" is considered a "ghost word".

3) Long Vowels: Learning to read word with long vowel sounds can be tricky...there are a lot of rules! One of these rules is "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and says it's name". We have been practicing this a lot lately in our reading and writing. We watched a few catchy videos to help us remember this rule. This was one of the videos that the students particularity enjoyed...

A Glimpse Into Our Classroom...

Daily 5 is one of our favourite parts of the day! It gives the students time to practice the skills they have been learning through hands on activities. It also gives Mrs. Ralston the opportunity to work with small groups of students on their specific learning needs. Here is a glimpse into what Daily 5 looks like in our classroom....
