Henry Fleming wants to be a war hero so he enlists in the army. During one of the battles, Henry realizes that he is afraid of dying and flees from the battle. Throughout the book, Henry learns that he must face his fears and he finds the courage to become the hero he always dreamed he would be.

Characters

Henry Fleming: Henry is a young teenage boy who wants to be a war hero

Wilson: Wilson is a private in Henry's group and who becomes Henry's friend

Jim Conklin: Henry's old friend who dies from a gunshot wound

Setting

Place: A civil war battlefield

Time: 1861-1865

Event 1

Henry wants to be a war hero so he goes and enlists in the army against his mother's wishes.The day he leaves his mother tells him to be good and follow the rules and don't hang around bad men.After they say goodbye Henry gathers his courage, and sets off to report for duty.


This event relates to the conflict because it is during this time that Henry decides to go off and fight in the army to fulfill his dream of becoming a war hero.


Event 2

Several days after Henry joined the army, he finally gets to fight in a battle. During the fight, Henry starts to feel something change. He doesn't really feel concerned about his well being and instead cares about his company and winning the fight.


This event relates to the conflict because it is during this battle that Henry, if only for a few moments felt what it was like to be an actual soldier.



Event 3

After winning the battle, Henry and the rest of his company goes to bed. Almost immediately after Henry wakes up, the enemy attacks. Henry, who is frozen in shock, watches as the unsuspecting men in his company are being ruthlessly attacked and slaughtered. Henry, in his panic, flees from the camp.


This event relates to the conflict because it is during all of this chaos that Henry realizes that he is afraid of death.

Event 4

Henry decides to go back to the regiment. With some help form another traveler, he is able to find where his company is. When he makes it to the camp, he is greeted by Wilson who helps with his head wound.


This event relates to the conflict because it is during this event that Henry finds the courage to go back to go back to his regiment even though he is afraid.

Event 5

At the end of the story, Henry goes back to the army in time to lead the regiment in time to lead the regiment to victory and win the final battle. Afterwards, the soldiers are all praising him and want him to become the commanding officer.


This final event relates to the conflict because it is during this event that Henry becomes the hero he dreamed of becoming and learned that you have to face your fears to fight for the things you believe in.
