STRONGSVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES LEED SILVER CERTIFICATION
The United States Green Building Council recently announced that Strongsville Middle School has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement. This silver certification identifies Strongsville Middle School as a showcase example of sustainability, recognizing leadership in the building industry. LEED certification endorses building projects that have achieved the goal of creating highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings.
SCS MUSIC DEPARTMENT RAISING FUNDS FOR NEW GRAND PIANO
The cornerstone of Strongsville High School’s music program, the Grand Piano, has been utilized for over 45 years. The Grand Piano accompanies 14 musical groups at SHS, as well as several local organizations utilizing the SHS Auditorium on a regular basis. Assisting more than 540 SHS music students per week, the Grand Piano is an important instrument is the SHS ‘fleet’ of instruments. The SCS Music Department is currently fundraising to purchase a new Grand Piano for our District. SAVE ON BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING DURING OHIO’S SALES TAX HOLIDAY (AUGUST 3-5)
If you still have school supplies to shop for, don’t forget Ohio’s sales tax holiday. The sales tax free weekend begins on Friday, August 3rd at 12:00am and ends on Sunday, August 5th at 11:59pm. During this first weekend in August, the following back to school items are exempt from sales and use tax:
- Clothing priced at $75 per item or less
School supplies priced at $20 per item or less
School instructional material priced at $20 per item or less
SUMMER BAND CAMP PARTICIPANTS PREPARE FOR HOMECOMING PERFORMANCE
More than 80 young instrumentalists are taking part in this year’s Summer Band Camp, under the direction of Strongsville music teachers Mrs. Strong and Mrs. Taylor. SHS band members are also providing instruction and guidance to the younger musicians. Originally created by now retired SHS Band Director Dave Harbart, this band camp takes place every summer and provides additional opportunities for students to sharpen their musical skills. Our community will have the chance to hear the fantastic sounds of this group, as they will be performing at Strongsville’s Annual Homecoming on Thursday, July 26th at 5:00pm.
SHS GRAD EARNS SPOT ON BILLBOARD’S 2018 LIST OF ‘TOP BRANDING POWER PLAYERS’
Congratulations to Jules Ferree (SHS Class of '00) for being named to Billboard's 2018 list of Top Branding Power Players. Jules is one of 73 individuals to be recognized on this prestigious list for marketing accomplishments in the music industry. She is the Head of Brand Partnerships at SB Projects and has worked on branding deals with Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and more. Most recently, Jules helped organize "Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief," including performances by Stevie Wonder, Usher, Blake Shelton, Dave Matthews, Demi Lovato, and Brad Paisley. To date, over $64 million has been raised for charities helping victims of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. HONORS/AP COURSES - SUMMER WORK
Students who are enrolled for honors and advanced placement (AP) courses in the next academic year are required to complete summer work that will be counted towards their first quarter grade. Assignments for Strongsville Middle School and Strongsville High School honors and AP courses are posted on the individual school websites, accessed by clicking on the ‘Summer Work’ link in the shortcuts column on the right hand side of each site. All work is to be done during the summer break. Any specific questions about the assignments may be addressed to the teachers of the particular course.
MAKERSPACE CAMPS RETURN THIS SUMMER
Attention incoming 4th and 5th graders - make plans to attend one of the SCS Makerspace Camps coming in August! Camps are being held at each of the elementary schools during the week of August 6th. From Ozobots to Green Screens to Rasberry Pi - these camps provide an opportunity for students to explore their creativity and problem-solving skills in our District’s Makerspaces. TEAM STRONGSVILLE TAILGATE
Don’t miss the first football game of the season and celebrate with all of Strongsville during the 6th Annual Team Strongsville Tailgate on Friday, August 24th. Music, food, and fun begin at 5pm in the parking lot next to Pat Catan Stadium. The Mustangs then kick off their season at 7:00pm against Berea-Midpark.
KINDERGARTEN SCREENING INFORMATION
Attention parents of incoming kindergarten students: This is a friendly reminder that kindergarten screening will take place August 13-16 at the Strongsville City Schools Administrative Offices (18199 Cook Avenue). An appointment should have been scheduled for your child during kindergarten registration. If you do not know your scheduled date/time, please call 440.572.7048.
The screening will take approximately 30-45 minutes and will consist of assessing your child’s hearing, vision, speech, motor skills and a few basic academic skills. Please arrive promptly at your designated time and, if possible, please make arrangements to bring only your incoming kindergartener. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the curriculum office at 440.572.7015. We look forward to working with your kindergarten student!
MUSTANGS BOYS SOCCER CAMP (July 23-26)
The 27th annual Strongsville Soccer Camp returns to the Ehrnfelt Soccer Complex (15301 Foltz Industrial Parkway) July 23 - 26. This camp is for K-5th grade boys, with a chance to learn and further develop your soccer skills from the SHS soccer coaching staff, SHS soccer alumni, and current SHS soccer players. MUSTANG EXPRESS PRESENTS ROCKIN’ IN THE ‘VILLE CAMP (AUG. 13-16)
Don’t miss this year’s “Rockin’ In The ‘Ville” Camp for girls and boys in 1st-8th grades. The camp runs from August 13-16, 9am - 12pm each day, at Strongsville Middle School. This is an exciting show choir camp designed to provide a unique opportunity to learn to sing and dance onstage, like the SHS Mustang Express. Members of the Mustang Express will provide instruction throughout the week, with a special performance by all campers on Thursday, 8/16. Click HERE for more information and a registration form.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR 7TH & 12TH GRADE STUDENTS FOR THE 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR
Please note the following immunization requirements from the Ohio Department of Health:
All students entering 7th grade need to receive the following immunizations prior to entering 7th grade:
One (1) dose of Meningococcal [MCV4] vaccine
(A second dose of meningococcal vaccine will be required prior to entry into the 12th grade)
- One (1) dose of Tdap [tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis] vaccine
All students entering 12th grade need to receive the following immunizations prior to entering 12th grade:
- Two (2) doses of Meningococcal [MCV4] vaccine
Only one (1) dose of MCV4 vaccine is required if either of the following conditions apply:
If the MCV4 vaccine is administered on or after the student’s 16th birthday, only one (1) dose of MCV4 vaccine is required.
If a student is in the 12th grade and is 15 years of age or younger, only one (1) dose of MCV4 vaccine is required.
7th and 12th graders will need to show proof of having received these vaccines before they can return to school for the 2018-19 school year (exemptions are provided for under law, call for more information).

Strongsville City Schools Health Services
Section 3313.671 of the Ohio Revised Code states that students who do not provide documentation of this immunization will be excluded from school on the 15th day after entrance, until proof is provided.
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Strongsville Community Theatre Auditions for “The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners”
Strongsville Community Theatre is excited to announce auditions for their October production - Reginald Rose’s “The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners.” In this fable, the students of Carson Corners High School take matters into their own hands when a freshman dies violently during a school lunch period. They ultimately teach the adults about responsibility and accountability.
This production has roles for 14 adults and 11 students, comprised of 12 males and 13 females. Adult roles range from corporate and educational professionals to blue-collar workers, one of which speaks in broken English. Age range for students is freshman through senior. Auditions will take place at the Strongsville Senior Center (located in the west end of the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center - 18100 Royalton Road, behind Target) and are scheduled for the following dates:
Sundays, July 15 & July 22 from 12:30pm - 3pm
Mondays, July 16 and July 23 from 6pm - 9pm
+ SCT auditions are open to everyone, and no roles are pre-cast. All ethnicities are invited.
+ No appointments will be taken, but please plan to stay for group readings.
+ Prepared monologues are not required. Script cuttings and character descriptions will be provided.
+ Headshots and resumes are welcome, but not required.
+ SCT does not offer union contracts; all performers are volunteers.

Families of girls who will begin kindergarten in the fall are invited to a Girl Scouts event at Strongsville Library on Wednesday, July 18 at 4pm. Join us for fun activities and to learn how Girl Scout troops are formed for kindergarteners.
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. As the world’s largest women’s leadership organization, we are the experts on girl programming. We work hard to support girls as they explore STEM, seek challenges outdoors, serve their community, and more – all in a safe, supportive, girl-led environment.

New State of the Art Recording Studio Open to the Public!
The Strongsville Branch Library Audio and Video Recording Studios are now open to the public. Customers interested in using Garage Band, iMovie, and the Adobe Suite to create sound recordings, video recordings, and more are welcome to sign-up for studio time up to one week in advance. In order to use the studio, customers must first attend an orientation session. Drop-in orientations will be held on Tuesdays - Audio studio orientation from 2:30-3:00 p.m. Video studio orientation from 3:00-3:30 p.m. and Saturdays, Audio studio orientation from 9:30-10:00 a.m. and Video studio orientation from 10:00-10:30 a.m. No registration is needed.
