The Reading Corner with Mrs. Samuel and Mrs. Snyder
We are enjoying settling back into our school routines. In 2-4 library classes, I begin class by asking the Question of the Week. Sometimes it is connected to a book we are reading or the time of year, and other times it’s simply a fun question! I love asking it, because I learn so much about your children, their family life, and their future dreams. They answer with insight, humor, and VERY FIRM convictions about their opinion! Along with fun “Would you rather” questions, I love asking about favorites- favorite breakfast, color, time of year, etc., and that is often where those firm convictions come out! I dislike pumpkin pie, so when I asked about their favorite dessert one week, every class developed strong pro or con pumpkin pie factions and it was so fun. It ended up being a silly and safe way for us all to have different opinions and still work together. Along with teaching them library skills and a variety of topics from the books we read, I love this part so much-- we all learn more about each other, how to communicate better, how to build relationships, and how to have a little fun along the way. (Don’t @ me about why pumpkin pie is good. It is a vegetable and does not belong in my pie! J)
In the K-1 library classes, I often ask them things after the end of the book about what happened. This week I'm finishing up Boxes for Katje by Candace Fleming with the 1st graders, and at the beginning I asked them what everyday objects they would miss (other than people and pets) if they didn't have them anymore. Most kids listed their toys, but when I said toothpaste and laundry soap, they looked at me quizzically until I explained a little more. We realized that things like socks, soap and sugar are more important than we realize and that some people who are in need don't have these basic items! It was a great way to connect students with present day problems as well as history.
Happy Reading!

Hot Cocoa Surprise in Mrs. Owen's Early Kindergarten Class
Mrs. Owen shared this:
"I played a little sciency trick on the kiddos called Hot Cocoa Surprise. I hid baking soda in the bottom of my hot cocoa and had the kids help me prepare it. They scooped spoonfuls of real cocoa mix into the mugs. Then add marshmallows. As we poured on what they thought was water, it was actually vinegar, my hot cocoa started reacting very slowly to produce giant chocolate bubbles! We had a lot of fun with this!"Mrs. Brewin's 1st Grade Class - What if you had Animal Ears?
"In science we have been learning about animal adaptations and how they help animals to survive in their environment. We did a project using the book What if you Had Animal Ears by Sandra Markle. Students took notes on four types of animal ears and then they chose and wrote about one type of animal ears they would like to have. Then they created a picture of themselves with their animal ears!"
Mrs. Pickerill's Preschool Class - New Year's Resolutions
Mrs. Pickerill shared this:
"Last week, we celebrated the New Year, 2021, and shared some of our new year's resolutions. I asked the children if they wanted to try something new, or what they wanted to do this year.
Here are the children's responses to the journal prompt:
"This year I want to..."
Anaya: "spend time with my family."
"be with my family."
"spend time with my family
"be with my Mom."
"play soccer."
"ride in a wheelbarrow."
"be with my family."
"be with Brooks and my family."
The popular answer was that most of the children enjoy spending time with their family and loved ones. :)"
Miss Camaya's Preschool Class is working on their letters connecting to make words!
Miss Camaya shared this:
"Today, we worked more on letter Ww by tracing words that began with Ww. We also did a new letter and word recognition activity where each student got a card with a picture and word. They would tell me the word, trace it, and then find matching foam letters that make the word. They really liked that activity during literacy circle time."
