The Giver by Lois Lowry
By Anthony Diem
Characters
Jonas is the main character in The Giver because the story is mainly about his adventures while being The Receiver. The Giver is also a very important character in this story because he is the only one that can give Jonas the memories and train him to be the next Receiver.
Setting
The community where Jonas Lives
The community where Jonas lives is a very strange place. There is no color and there are very strict rules about how people should live, and if you don't follow the rules, you get Released. There are no birthdays and people get certain privileges when a ceremony is held every December. This would be a very strange place to live.
Plot
In the beginning of the book, Jonas is getting ready for the ceremony of twelves when he will be given his assignment that will be his job until he is old. But things do not go as expected at the ceremony, the Elder gives him a very unusual and honoring assignment as the Receiver of Memory. The previous Receiver, who is now The Giver, is the one who is training Jonas. The Giver gives him memories of a place long ago when there was color and differences everywhere, but now there is just Sameness everywhere. Jonas believes, in some ways, that the place where he lives now should go back to how it was long ago. At the end of the book, Jonas saves a child and goes on a dangerous adventure.
