The show was fabulous. It showcased the amazing work of many young artists. It celebrated Youth Art Month in a major successful way. I was personally overwhelmed by the support from the students, parents, teachers/staff, and the community. I honestly didn't know what to expect, but the show exceeded it all. In case you could not make the show, here is a video slideshow of all the work. I must warn you, it is long at just over 31 minutes. But, it does show all 400+ pieces of artwork. So, if you have a few moment...enjoy. Video
ART 1
Informal Balance
In the end, it was a learning experience for all of us. I gained valuable knowledge to use in future lessons and the students learned about how they work and how to create from the conception of an idea to the final product.

ART 2: Painting and Drawing
Altered Books
From there, the student use the many pages as "blank" canvases to create artwork based around a theme. I give the students a list of prompts to help them have a jumping off point. Prompts include things like "fill the page with circles", "create a door or a window", "burn the page", "layers", "words, words, words", and many others. The students are to pick a prompt and go from there. It introduces them to other techniques for art making and it causes them to think outside the box when it comes to their work.
During the time we are working on our books, students also participate in a weekly artist reflection. On Fridays the students log into an online program where they answer questions from 2 domains out of 7 that deal with the artistic process and different ways that artists work. I think it is important that my students think like artists, and this helps to see what artists do, the processes they go through when creating art, and reflections to what they have created. I have learned a lot about my students through this process, and I hope they have too.
The books are coming out well. I have seen bits and pieces here and there, and I can't wait to see the books as wholes. Some of my kids are so creative. The ideas they are coming up with are so cool. I think this years books will be the best yet, and I have been doing this for many years.
